Tipping at Tim's

I notice that people are pretty consistent when it comes to tipping
bartenders, cabbies, hairdressers, etc. But when it comes to Tim's,
many leave change on the counter, many don't. (Any change I receive
typically goes into the donation box if it doesn't go into my pocket.)

What's the "rule"? Do most tip at Tim's? And what's the rationale
for tipping at coffee shops when most wouldn't tip at fast-food
joints, corner stores, etc?

No one's supposed to tip at fast food places. That's one of the
reasons they are popular.

don't think there's any rule..

i tip at Tim's.. my coffee, when i buy one, is important to me..i tip if
i'm served in a timely manner with a smile.. if the server is rude,
impatient, or pre-occupied by other than being busy with work, i won't
tip..

also, i generally only go to certain Tim's..and i know the people who
work at those stores from dealing with them regularly..so i tip them..

just my personal preference..

I wont tip anywheres unless I get exceptional service. What the heck is the
point of tipping if you just get the same dull service everytime.

I have never understood why people 'tip' at Tim Horton's. Most of the time,
the service is so bad, that the people working aren't even earning their
pay.

The 'rule' used to be, you leave a tip for a waitress or waiter that has
provided you with exemplary service. Now-a-days, it almost seems, that
people are too lazy, to put their money back into their pockets.

This has been a debate around my place for a long time...and I thought I was
rational..but on this issue I am not. For some reason I always leave a litte

I give them the dime that's left over...more if I order more. The rationale
would be the same as a bartender...usually when I get to the counter my
coffee is ready for me to go...

Fast food joints owe McDonald's for the lack of any tipping...when
McDonalds was first coming out they had ads that specifically said "No
Tipping"...

I tried to tip a McDonalds employee once for being very curtious, etc. She
told me that she wasn't allowed to accept tips because they had to account
for all funds recieved and it would throw off her till....
Other than that, I only tip if the service I recieve is promt, professional,
etc.
If it's not, I'll leave a rather insulting tip, like a nickle for a 30$ meal
or something.... just to let them know....

I always tip at Timmies, unless the service is really bad, like a girl too
busy talking to her co-worker while handing me my coffee paying no attention
to me, or one who is just plain cranky.
I've been going to the same Timmies every morning for 6 years, and they make
the best coffee. I don't even have to order some morning's I get "the Usual
Steve?" Yes please is my reply, and my wifes name and mine are on the cups.
Not to say every Tim's doesn't look after thier regulars this way, but good
service requires a tip in my books.
It's hard enough to find a job that pays well when you have kids to raise,
but tipping in coffee shops sure helps them out at a min wage job.
My hats off to Timmies on Portland St, downtown.

Steve

At my "home" Tim's I usually leave a nickle or dime on an extra large,
others it depends on the service, except for the drive thru on Wyse Rd. I
never never tip there steming from an incident when the waitress decided
that my change (4 cents to be exact) was her's and not mine even when I
asked for it (she actually argued with me over it). This was the second
time it hapened there and so, no tipping for me there.

The not passing back the change also happened at my "home" Tim's as well,
but a quiet word to the manager on duty quickly stopped that from
happening again. She was more annoyed than I was over it

I like the story about the man at a diner who had received less than stellar
service, the food wasn't all that good, and the waitress seemed to have a
perpetual snarl on her face. She brought him the check and he happend to have
exact change, and that's when the waitress said "what about a tip?" And the man

If I buy gas at Wilson's and if I use full service I always give the
person the 2¢ per Lt. cash discount.

Mind I only use full service if it is reak cold or raining hard. That
worth a small tip. $1.00 - $2.00

The term "TIPS" comes from the acronym, "To Insure Prompt Service". By
definition, you are tipping not only to reward great service today,
but to insure that you are afforded that great service on your next
visit.

Until recently, I wasn't aware that tipping gas station attendants was
the ettiquette. Now I try to remember to tip them when I don't pump my
own. It makes sense to tip them. Consider that they clean your
windows, check your fluids, and occassionally check your tires. I
would think that those activities warrant a tip.

Cheers

I guess that's what I was wondering... My understanding is that some
employees are paid With the Expectation that their tips will make up
for otherwise crappy wages; bartenders and waiters would be examples.
So... when the manager/supervisor/whatever at Tim's determines what a
new employee's wage will be, is tipping taken into account?

Yes it is. About five years ago, I bought two beers at the liquor dome for

When I queried him, he informed it was a tip. There was nearly a fight

There are six lanes but I'll guarentee that's not cutting out six

That would depend greatly, on whether or not you thought the virtual service

If it was, the amount is entirely up to your discretion. ;^)
