Oh that's too bad - we enjoyed going there tho haven't been in a while.
Brewdebakers is yummy, but the TexMex was really good, and there
aren't a lot of options for it in the city. You'd think Lone Star would
be the one that they'd keep open since there are a zillion restaurants
like Brewdebakers in Bayers Lake.

Who would be the 'they'? The free market?
The "they" I was referring to was SAS Restaurants since "they" own both
Brewdebakers and The Lone Star.

Joni
The "they" would be SAS Restaurants which owns the Lone Star locations
in Halifax and Moncton along with a Brudebakers in Dartmouth and the
Lower Deck.
I've neve been to Mexicali Rosa's on Spring Garden. I try to avoid
that area due to the lack of parking. Can anyone advise whether the
food and pricing is comparable to Lone Star's?
I also like the authentic Mexican food at the little restaurant in
Fairview whose name escapes me (the watermelon beverage is awesome)
but they don't have fajitas on the menu.
Unfortunately, I probably helped put a nail in the coffin of Lone
Star. In this economy, our family has had to cut way back on
restaurant meals and really watch for bargains in the grocery stores
to keep our food budget as low as possible. I've made fajitas at home
but they're just not the same. I'm going to try my hand at homemade
tortillas as I'm told they're easy to make.

I'll also miss Lone Star. I really enjoyed their fajitas and, like you,
I've tried unsuccessfully to replicate them at home - they just aren't
the same. I also really liked their Mexican rice... there is a flavour
that I just can't place. I keep experimenting at home, but I can't get it.
I wonder why they wouldn't co-brand the location, or even add some of
the best selling Lone Star items onto the Brewdebaker's menu. Lone Star
was usually fairly busy whenever we went (and we tend to dine outside of
the traditional mealtime hours).
Too bad... another good restaurant gone. We also used to go to Mike's
restaurant in Bedford quite often, and we miss that one too.
We dine at Brewdebaker's on occasion in Dartmouth, but we certainly
won't cross the bridge to dine at the Halifax location (unless they're
planning to close the Burnside site).
As for Mexicali Rosa's: I've dined there two or three times over the
years, not often. I seem to recall that they have decent enough food,
but not good enough to justify the hassle of eating on Spring Garden
Road. I can't remember the prices... they probably have a website.

It's excellent Mexican Food - Mexico Lindos! It's quite authentic - as
compared to Lone Star which is tex mex instead of Mexican. Yummy - now
I'm hungry!

I've made homemade tortillas once. The ingredients are simple, the
only problem I had was that they're VERY hard to roll! The dough was
rather tough, and you have to roll them thin. They were tasty though.
You can buy tortilla presses, they probably make that job easier.
I can't say I'll miss LoneStar all that much. My impression of the
food was stuff that is of the prepackaged frozen variety that's mostly
just reheated rather than havikng people who are actually adding
ingredients and MAKING dishes.
I really enjoy Mexico Lindos, we always get the meal for two (which
really is enough for more than just two).
I haven't been to Brewdebakers for years, only because it is
inconveniently located for us.

That place was pretty good I thought :-)

I'm the same way with Mexican food... I can eat Indian food; a friend's
family owned an Indian restaurant in the Brewery Market, and despite the
need for *many* pitchers of water, I found it enjoyable.
The closest thing I've had to real Mexican food was Mexicali Rosa's... ate
there once with friends. Being new to it, I stuck with chili. It was
both bland and hot (spicy) at the same time... not something I'd spend
money for again.

Many moons ago the Lone Star and Brewdebakers used to be good. Lone Star
was a private restaurant franchise and Brewdebakers was owned by the
Maritime Brewery. The Lone Star had the best fajitas around, and some of
the best ribs too. Brewdebakers had an awesome fish and chips, and with
a taster's menu of their fine BEvERages it was a meal to please.
..then came SAS.
Once the brewery was sold and MegaSwilled in to oblivion, SAS took over
and dumbed down the menu of both Brewdebakers and the Lone Star in to
things I could get a the frozen section of Sobeys.
Just my opinion, but justified by a discerning palate.

Does anybody know if Brewdebakers is open yet?
KD
Never mind, just called and they ARE open! Apparently they opened
three weeks ago, that was fast.
KD
We too were underwhelmed. We had ribs that were quite a bit tougher
than I would have preferred, and featured a burnt flavour throughout,
although they didn't look burnt. The fajitas rate an OK, but the
portion of condiments provided (cheese/sour cream/salsa) was
inadequate, about two teaspoons of shredded cheese for the four
fajitas.
Overall, I give it a pass. Maybe it will get better as time goes on?

What, no guacamole?
Hmmm...had to think about that - I have an aversion to green slimy
foods, so would have ignored it if it were there. :) But no, I don't
think there was any.

Heheee, it is Mexican after all.
