Inspired by the 3rd movie based oh the book (this one in German)
I dug out my circa 1968 paperback of the book and re-read it yet again.

This ought to be required reading in all schools. It might make
people think twice about the "glory" of war. It's set during mid-WW I
(~1916,) but I bet the horrors described in it mirror what is going on
in Ukraine today.

One would think after more than 100 years and WW II, someone would
wise up. We are a stupid species.

I agree about supporting Ukraine.

Statistically risks of deaths from war are decreasing over time
in spite of WW1 and WW2. So, stupid though we many be as a
species, progress is being made, just not as fast as we would wish.

Of course WW3 could change that. :(

I think the support for Ukraine is dwindiling slightly from the
ultra-right. The MAGA idiots, TFG's adorers, the PeePee CONs here in Canada,
etc. They are of the "It's not our problem" mindset, and will only get
onboard if their investments include weapon's manufacturing
companies. There's no empathy of caring from those guys . . . it's all
about "Me, me, me!"

Moderate and left wing thinkers are still supporters of anti-war and
help the little guy, AFAIK.

This sounds right to me. I notice much the same thing. It's just not
politically correct to come right out and say it. It might be simply
the "old news is boring" syndrome.

I think you are right. Trudeau hasn't done a bad job, but like all
of them, after the 8-10 year mark, the "Time for a change" monkey jumps
on their back. And when it's "time for a change," people don't think
about who the new fellow will be.

How do you think Doug Ford got to be premier of Ontario? Same with
TFG in the USA. Most of it is just being in the right place at the right
time.

On the positive side, with the health care agreement signed for 10
years, PeePee can't mess that up. He'll do a lot of damage to the
middle-class and the poor, but I don't think he can mess with the health
care transfers.
