I wouldn't trust the gauge to last very long. One bump and it will
shatter and be useless. Electric start is nice. I've never used the
12V output on my generator. Get a wheel kit if one is available.
You'll have a hard time dragging the generator around without it.
Where are you purchasing the generator? I'd be weary about what appears
to be a cheap Chinese knockoff. Remember, you get what you pay for...

I'd like to know Nova Scotia Power reaction to using the GenerLink.
They would have to visit the residence for the installation as the seals
on the meter would have to be removed.
It may prove comparable in price once the cost of the transfer panel and
breakers, installation, etc are added up.
I've heard the GenerLink is available locally at a price of about $1000,
but have not confirmed this. It may well be a worthwhile alternative
once you add the price of the transfer panel, breakers, and
installation. NSP could make or break the system as they essentially
hold all the cards. Would you prefer to own something or pay rent on it
forever? $120 per year adds up and would eventually exceed the cost of
a transfer panel. You would still have to keep paying and never own it.
A few phone calls could clear this up, maybe someone else has the
information needed...
The GenerLink can be used with up to a 7500 watt generator which must
have a floating neutral. Have a look at the downloads section on the
GenerLink web page, http://www.generlink.com/downloads.cfm
Bill.
Here is the E-Mail response from Generlink:
"Bill,
Thank you for your interest in GenerLink.
Nova Scotia Power has approved the unit for use by their member consumers,
however they are still in the process of developing a program through which
to make the units available to their members. In the mean time, you can
purchase from any Home Hardware Store as they are working now to stock units
in all their stores. The already have a great program in place to move
product across the border and through customs so are well armed to be a
great resource for GenerLink throughout Canada.
I would also recommend for you to contact Nova Scotia Power to inform them
of your interest in the product.
This will encourage them to get a program together sooner rather than later
for their members to have more immediate access to the GenerLink unit.
Pricing wise, we retail the GenerLink set (the GenerLink Unit together with
a standard 20' GenerLok Cord) for $650.00 USD. I do not know what the
customs and shipping charges to Canada will add to that total.
Sincerely,
Tina Hattaway

Based on your email $1000 wouldn't be too far off.
Have you contacted NSP to get their take on GenerLink?
Will it be a rental unit or property of the homeowner?
How much will they charge for the installation?
Bill.

I know it's not the best generator, but does the Colman 5000W from Canadian
Tire have a floating neutral? I'm at work and can't check the manuals and
I'm not sure if it would tell me anyway.

An easy check is to use one of the electrical testers with three lights.
Start the engine and plug it in. If the generator uses a floating
ground it will indicate an open ground.
It is usually a relatively straightforward change to rewire for floating
neutral.
