My son is taking Art as a course in his second semester. The teacher
gave them a list of supplies to buy:

varius sizes of pencils
a sketch pad
two types of erasers
a blending stump
colored pencils

The teacher suggested Walmart had the cheapest price for these supplies
and that Loomis & Toles and the art store at NSCAD are places to get
the other goods.

I tried Staples first and found a sketch book and the color pencils but
they were sold out (or didn't carry) some of the other items. There
were four other parents at the store looking for similar things and
between us we represented four different high schools in HRM. I guess
it pays to shop around because the sketch book I bought was $8.99 at
Staples and only $5.99 at Walmart BUT the 60 pack of colored pencils
was only $7.99 at Staples and the exact same package at Walmart was $12
and change.

Anyway, can anyone else suggest locations where I might find art
supplies besides Loomis & Toles or NSCAD? NSCAD is only open M-F til
5pm and L&T is only open til 8pm on two nights not to mention its a
bugger to try and park in the downtown. I work M-F 8-5 so getting to
these stores for me will be next to impossible not to mention that I
risk them being sold out since there are so many students trying to buy
these supplies.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I don't know if it's still there or not... but McDonald's stationary (they
may have changed their name, it's in the same little shop as the post
office) in the Cole Harbour strip mall where Sobey's is used to all these
products. I haven't been there in about a year or so, so I'm not even sure
if they're still there or not. good luck!

Atlantic Fabrics on Strawberryhill St. probably has everything you're
looking for. Cheaper than NASCAD, too.
Good luck !

Staples usually has several different sizes of pencils.....but...of course
they are not with the other pencils.....they are with the drafting supplies
in a totally separate section of the store. I asked them about different
sizes of pencils once and they never sent me to the drafting section......I
happened to find them myself! Good luck!!

Canada Crafts in Bayer's Road and Dartmouth have a good selection of
art tools - much less than L&T.

Loomis & Toles is open on Saturday. The craft Canada store is Dartmouth has
been closed now for at least 6 months and the one in Halifax at Bayers road
may also be closed now, they were selling off what they had left in December
and after that closing I think. You may be surprised to see the prices for
some of the art supplies at Loomis and Toles, some stuff is not any more
than at Walmart I know this because my daughter has been going there for a
few years now, she is into art. Good luck!

The Bayers Road location has not existed for months. The Dartmouth location
has been closed for well over a year.
