Right, it started out on Gottigen, moved to Kempt and then down to
Barrington when it closed it's doors for good...what a shame. There's
only one place in Halifax that has good live bands...the Marquee Club
(old Derby / Cousin Brucies)...The good old days....

I think it was Gottingen, Kempt, then Barrington. The Barrington
location was our hangout from '88 to '92 or so. During that time, it
changed from The Misty Moon to The New Misty Moon, and the guy who
owned it also owned the Palace, I believe -- Jeff, IIRC.
Not long after that, still in the early '90s, a friend and I were
making our rounds through the downtown area, and I decided to drop
into the Moon to see some of the old crowd. The place was dead; all
told, there May have been ten people in the entire place -- including
the two of us. I ordered a local beer; it was $4.25 or $4.50. Then I
figured it was no bloody wonder that people were going elsewhere.
It closed pretty soon after that. Maybe the management wanted to
concentrate their efforts on the Palace alone??

It was on Barrington until it became the Roxbury for a brief stint then
closed down.
Trooper (seemingly) played there every weekend. Saw Lee Aaron, Kim
Mitchell there too. When it became the Roxbury there were several great
shows in a short period (Our Lady Peace, I Mother Earth, Ginger, Tea
Party).

Donk Has Spoken.
Someone tried. The Recession got it, along with an lot of other places.

I disagree, it was best on Kempt Road. Barrington had great acts,
but Kempt had the *best* acts. Here's a sampling...
Besides the very best Atlantic Canadian acts, Kempt had:
Edgar Winter
Johnny Winter
Levon Helm/Cate Brothers
Steppenwolf
Joe Cocker
Three Dog Night
George Thorogood
Elvin Bishop
Long John Baldry
Tower of Power
Lisa Dal Bello
Toronto
Downchild Blues band
Roy Buchanan
David Wilcox
Powder Blues
Delbert McClinton
Atlantic Rhythm Section
Blushing Brides
Bonnie Bramlett (Bonnie Sheridan)
Commander Cody
Crystal Ship
Gary `U.S.' Bonds
Gregg Allman
Luba
Mamas and Papas
Martha & the Muffins
Nighthawks
Rick Derringer
Roy Young
Rough Trade
Walter Zwol
... and on, and on, and on ...

I believe it was 1992, but can't remember. Gottingen closed in 1979 or
80, Kempt in 1984.

It is.

The Panagiotakos (PAN-na-yah-TALK-os) family owned all the Misty Moon's
and The Palace. They sold The Barrington Moon around 1988, I think, but
kept The Palace. Steve ? owned The Moon for a while, or maybe managed it -
I can't remember, but think he owned it. He also owned Clancey's for a
while, in the 1980's. It's possible that when The Panagiotakos family sold
The Palace, that one of the later Moon owners may have bought it, but I
don't know. I am under the impression that only the Panagiotakos family
owned both.

By then, no one was going anywhere. The Recession took care of that.
Also, too, the cost of the U.S. dollar had risen so high that the club was
unable to bring in the international acts which, in earlier times, had
cemented its reputation.

Again, I did not know that both were owned by the same person in the
1990's. The Palace was a smaller club in a lower tax bracket and survived
via DJ/disco, which kept costs low.
Richard
Nope. A small recession in 1983 saw audiences drop and such a large
club could not maintain itself. It closed in 1984, shortly after the
owners bought The Palace. They felt the university/downtown crowd could
sustain a smaller, centrally located club.
Richard
I believe it was around 1990 or so when Bob MacDonald's closed. I remember
reading about it in the Herald on a Saturday morning and that it seemed
pretty sudden. He had gotten into some financial difficulty apparently due
to trying to help bail out his son who had a Pontiac dealership in
Sackville that also went under. It was too bad; Bob was a good guy and he
ran a good dealership. I remember going there as a kid to see the new car
introductions back in GM's heyday and they always had some Vette, Z-28 or
4-4-2 there for me to drool over.

I always associate the place in my mind with Doug and the Slugs. Great
fun. Also, I seem to have a dim memory of seeing BTO there around 1984 or
so. Those were the days...

Sorry, I misread this. I was tired last night and trying to et caught
up.

That should have been "Atlanta".
Richard

*** Doug and the Slugs played mainly at the Kempt Road location. I
think they were only at Barrington once or twice, but I could be wrong.
I stopped going when it became The Roxbury.

*** BTO were at the Barrington location twice. I think the years were
1986 and 1988. I can check, if you need the exact dates.
