I am building an H13 for this years burn, I've been wanting to for years but only this year have the logistics worked out.

So, My question(s) are in regards to which material should I use?

1" seems a bit thin, but I've deff seen it on the playa, 1.5" is what I'm looking mostly....2" seems like overkill to me, but I'm new to hexayurts.

Here is a link to the 1.5" R-Tech at home depot ( LINK )  would this work? if no, why not?

what should one expect to pay per panal for 1" 1.5" and 2"?

thanks for your help!

pictures and video to come.

Price will vary VERY widely according to local markets.. you should look it up on Lowes and/or Home Depot to get a sense of retail pricing. Look for RMAX.

in my area, that shows $27.25 per 1.5" panel. However, Home Despot doesn't seem to carry it in many stores at all. I checked the east coast and nada.

However, you can bet this is probably the most expensive you can buy it for, or close to it.

1" is available at my local Lowes for 19.98

YMMV!

thanks, but what I'm trying to understand is the difference between the R-max and the Thurmax and the R-Tech
it's my understaning that the higher the R-value, the better. so I dont see the problem with R-tech as opposed to r-max (the price for 1.5" is $14  vs $26 for rmax, and yet the R value only differs by 2 points and both feel about the same in person)

I'm going to be building one yurt for myself, but also about 4-5 more for others in our camp, so even a few dollars makes a big difference.
but of course I don't want to build it from something that will fall apart of cause problems either.

thanks for your time

Xain,

I built an H13 for 2011.

2" is overkill unless you're going to be in very cold or hot extremes for extended periods of time.  Also remember that, assuming you're going to stack these panels on top of your car roof (or wherever you may transport them), the thicker the panel, the higher the entire pile will ride on top of your car, worse aerodynamics, more smashed bugs to clean off, etc. I used 1" which was fine but I'd say 1.5" is the best of both worlds.

The main thing to keep in mind is you want to use polyisocyanurate (polyiso for short).  You do not want to use any other material. Only use polyiso. So stick with R-max or Thermax.

Thermax is Dow's brand name, it's polyiso.

R-max is just another brand name (and the company's name), this is also made out of polyiso.

R-tech (different brand and different company) serves a similar purpose but it is NOT polyiso, it's expanded polystyrene aka EPS. There are also panels out there made from extruded polystyrene (the pink or blue stuff). You do NOT want to use the pink or blue stuff and/or you do not want to use expanded/extruded polystyrene

R-tech also does NOT have reflective foil on the outside.  It has a different type of skin that is made to be pest-resistant and is intended to be only used in situations where it's going to be encased in a wall or inside some other protected situation.  It is not intended for being exposed to the elements.  Whereas R-max and Thermax can both be left exposed to the elements, given you don't have huge rips in your foil skin (which eventually you will put some rips in your panel foil skins, it's inevitable).  So make sure you buy polyiso panels with foil skin.  And build your yurt with the foil logo side inwards, and the plain foil side outwards. And buy foil tape to patch up any foil skin rips.

Make sure you build the yurt at home before you go, have it all cut, mostly taped and ready to go. Do not arrive at the playa with uncut panels and try to build it out there, it will be miserable and you will generate lots of moop (matter out of place).

Otherwise, enjoy the adventure.

-Alejandro

Alejandro.

Thank you!, exactly the answers i was looking for, so I need roughly 40 Poly iso panals.     R-tech is not Polyiso, hence the lower price tag, and also it's more likely to breakdown and it's not as weather resistant.

I am going to make a couple h12's and my h13, as well as as many little h5's as I can carry.

and yeah I'm building everything in Tahoe, and driving to playa from there.
I've been playing with adhesives and found the perfect roofing adhesive for the joint tape as well.

all edges will be sealed pre-playa.

Awesome X, welcome to Tahoe. I live in South Lake Tahoe, building my hexayurt in august too to prep for burning man. Luckily already bought the tape, now I just need to buy the panels.

btw carson city is closer than Reno if you'll be on south shore in case you're pricing them out already at specific stores. There are local hardware stores in SLT, but I haven't checked if they carry r-max yet.
