Hey looking to build a hexayurt for a living space at my burn (I bought my first one).
And thought I'd check if anyone is creating them, or doing test builds in the Bay Area.

Hey Jason,  I am building a 6' hexayurt in Felton,CA. It's near Santa Cruz.  I  am using the camp danger hinge, 6" & 3'& 2" tape.  Have 15 panels side & end taped & am cutting the 12 diagonals today.  I built a scale model out of 1/4" plywood .  Got the R-Max 1" from Home depot  & tape from Harrison Brothers Inc.  You are welcome to come by.  8458 E. Zayante Rd. Felton,CA.  831-246-1511
Only 3 weeks or so to departure.

Brent!

Thanks for reaching out, wish I had posted sooner.  Had work most of the day and planning to go meet Julie Danger for her taping tonight.  Let me know if the work ends up being extended I could probably come out another time.

Also let me know how it goes!

Hi Jason, i am flying in from Australia on the 20th and staying in sanfrancisco untill the 23rd when heading out to reno.
I am wanting to build a HY and  need a little advice as to where i can get the sheeting from and the tape.

I have found home depot has it at $20  sheet of 1inch.  Is that a good price? Is there better or cheaper or?
The tape i have not been able to find.  I need a shit load of 6" and half as much 3". Where can the tape be purchased off the shelf?

Lastly....    i am trying to contact a place called the generator in reno where it MAY be possible to prefabricate it BUT it is NOT a sure thing.
So, any help or ideas as to where i can prefab the HY in Sanfan would be greatly appreciated.

David,

You can't purchase the tape off the shelf, as far as I am aware... it is industrial bifilament packing tape. The sheets are also hard to find, especially in the bay, this time of year. People have purchased them at Home Depots and Lowes, but you may have to go to a lot of them to find it, if it exists at all, or go out into the east or south, away from the city.

Also, what are you going to do with it when you fly back?

You've definitely set yourself a challenge here... ;)

If you really want to do this... I would order tape online IMMEDIATELY and have it shipped to someone in SF area for you that can hold it.  This place might do: http://hexayurttape.com/

Secondly, I would start calling hardware stores in the bay area and asking them if they have R-Max or Tuff-R 1" Polyisocyanate board. It HAS to be polyisocyanate. If they don't know what that is, tell them it is "very stiff. Much stiffer than normal insulation board. It doesn't bend at all". The moment they say "yes, we do", make sure they have enough panels in stock, and offer to pay them right then and there for them, and hold them for you when you come out.

Lastly, if you are not going to take the HY with you when you leave, find someone at the burn who wants it, and can take it back with them. Or store it in Reno in a small storage locker for next year.

Also remember you'll need to secure it down to the playa with rope and rebar. So get a big roll of rope (they have a lot of that at hardware stores cheap), and 4-6 pieces of 3 foot long, 3/8" rebar. you take two pieces of water pipe, put one over the rebar, and let 6" peek out the top. then put your foot down on it, put the other pipe over that 6" and bend it into a hook.

Hope this helps!

Agree.  Things to think about:

1) plan for transporting the boards to the playa

2) space to cut the boards before travel

3) can you preorder the boards at lowes/home depot for them to be there on the 20th? If so, you can get everything, save the tape, when you go to pick it up.

4) you may want to secure all of above before purchasing tape.  If you want to have the tape shipped to me, email me privately.  My office is downtown and my home is in central part of the city.

5) don't forget you'll need tools to cut the tape and boards. And a tarp.

Thanks for the advice guys.
Adam, yes please i would like to take you up on the having the tape delivered to you to hold for me. Thank you.
I need your address though.

Picking up a chrysler mini van. So. if the  cargo area not ong enough i intend to cut each sheet into two.  4x4
Yes, will gift the HY to our group camp at the end.
Either rebar or long steel pegs is a must and going to use a rope bra. with two ropes from the bra per side and if the boards are cut into 4x4 then will also reinforce in the middle of each sheet with left over plywood from our doorway and frame and extra rope guys.

As i dont knwo SF at all... i am not sure which hardware/builder suppliers may be the best to research.  i already calle dhome depot to find the one at san raphael had like 50 sheets last week. but i can only preorder for will call up to one week only. which seems like not enough time..so i will take your advice and get hunting....

i intend prefabricating it in reno. i have got word back from 'the generator' space where art projects etc can be assembled or made.

Yes, tools.. sharp knives with spare blades a must.
What do you use to keep a straight line when cutting the board?
Do you cut  the roof panels mitre cuts or just 90degrees and make up the gaps with tape?
Do you do mitre cuts for the joing walls?

By the way, im jsut making a square 8x8 one with 8ft centre peak.

Thank you gentlemen
