Absolutely lovely piece of work, Gavin. Absolutely lovely. I think
this would make an *excellent* first build hexayurt for people going
to Burning Man with a hexayurt for the first time. Not a ton of space,
but *so incredibly easy to build* because it doesn't have the complex
taping of the roof cone, which can be a challenge for first timers.

Great work.

Maybe part of the build van be made *inside* a bigger one that's already built?

I've done a paper model (can't see skp from phone) and I end up with 4 unused small triangles. Also, I make more cuts than described. ???

So, if someone could do a flat model of the cuts, I'd really really appreciate it - I'm just very slow at understanding 3D.

Looks like the family of *shapes* can't grow much more (devilish grin). For plywood, I wonder what the solution space is for *joints*.

The landscape looks good!

If those triangles are from the roof panels, well there is no real need to cut them off, if you don't want to (middle model).  Another option is to cut of just one end of the shelter's  roof triangles and add them to the other end, to make a small awning (left model).

Ok, starting to see here. Over at the "H13 plywood" page at appropedia, each panel and triangle is named, so let me give that a try.

The H4 has, if I understand correctly, at most 10 pieces: 2 roofs (R), 4 end walls (E), and 4 small triangles for the 2 side walls (S). Each R is a full panel minus 2 small triangles. Each E is a big triangle (a panel cut thru the diagonal) minus a small triangle (S).

I think the third variant of the H4 (does it have a non-normalised name?) stands best to wind, no?

This is huge. Thanks!

Thanks Vinay,

The original design goals were:
  • Temporary house 2 people/young family.
  • Simple, quick construction.
  • Remove the need for joins in the roof panels.
  • Easily moved by two people.
  • Ability to be "beehived" to create larger structures.

Sorry for the confusion, I should learn more sketchup to show the details more clearly.  The design originates from my prospecting a 1/4 sized H13 model and visualising a normal 2400x1200 sheet as four sheets.  I soon realised that if I had two H13 doors on either end, there would be only one roof joint.

The side walls  (S) are 1/4 of a sheet (1200x600), two ends (E) are then cut from the remaining 1800x1200 sheet.  The roof (R) can remain uncut, or if you think windage is a problem, chop them off and use them as a ground insulation inside, or if you want to give the door some protection from the elements, cut off two triangles from the rear and add them to the front.  I say, "Horses for courses."

I've attached a quick image of the panel cuts.  I hope this helps.

*blasted* Now I see it, thanks!!!
/me goes back to sleep, as now the day is done.

Seriously, this permanent exercise at seeing and reseeing common panels is quite an experience.

"Just four cuts." At most, four more cuts.

Brilliant! Thanks!

Can't from phone, but I can imagine the H2 wikipage at appropedia. I won't ever go to BM (live too far), but I wonder, would a wikipage soon be helpful for this year's burners, or is it too late?

They'll be building up until 4AM the day they get into vans ;-)

Basically getting an H13 together last minute is not feasible, but doing an H4 is easy - doesn't have the complicated roof geometry to assemble, which is quite hard conceptually.

Gavin, if you make the "tall" panels using the offcuts from the roof, you can divide the wall panels into neat thirds (2 boards gives six identical wall pieces) and have a slightly higher unit, and zero waste.

Elegant, no?

Modeled with paper: 6 foot tall, zero waste, 8 cuts. Will attempt Danger hinges with cardboard, later. Wow.

This is great! I'm going to build a bunch of these this year and
suggest other people do so as well.

I think this is the perfect last minute hexayurt.and should be widely
considered among procrastinators.

In some of my early designs, I looked at using the triangles and cutting the panels into thirds (thanks for the reminder, I'd forgotten all about that idea).  It meetings your goals of zero waste and increases living space.  From what I remember, some of the reasoning why I decided against it was:
  • Complicates construction.  More measuring and cutting and would require joints in the end panels. More skill and time required.
  • The increased height (from 1200 to 1400 or 4' to 4'7") still wouldn't allow you to stand up.
  • I like the idea of a little rain protection over the doorway to stop the Irish mist from bucketing into the shelter and would allow ventilation holes to help control condensation.
  • Easier to keep warm
  • Increased windage.
  • Increased visual pollution.

It's one of the beautiful things about the hexayurt, you can adapt the design to meet your needs.

And the un-cut roof panel could be re-cycled into a larger hexayurt at a latter stage.

Gavin,

Wow. Yes. So, whenever the wikipage gets done, this (H4, procrastiyurt, or whatever it gets called) is really a family/group/set of designs.

For plywood, halving the number of cuts (and keeping half the panels whole) is important. Plus you get more places (outside, below the roof) to put blocks and then run screws through.

This may well be my first real size yurt ever: plywood, 4 cuts plus a door, will look at how to waterproof the very top. Basically, a third of the cost of an H12, which I wouldn't use anyway. More portable, too! And, not sure, buildable by a single person?

My thoughts exactly, I even played around with building it similar to the way these guys build furniture:

http://playatech.com/product_list.php

So that I could assemble without screws and use either a tube of silicone or duct tape to seal the joints.

I even imagined a kit where the panels had perforated cuts, predrilled holes, ready for someone to"break" the kit open and quickly assemble the shelter.  The perforated side/end panels would be sandwiched between the two roof panels.  These could be assembled, with 2" timbers precut at the required angle, with some wood glue, a handful of screws and a screwdriver (or for us lazy people, a electric drill).

Pictures (from phone) of H4 model built in a few minutes from 4 10 cm x 20 cm x 3 mm shiny panels. Maybe together with the rest or the content from this thread it will magically become a wikipage. (I'm expecting better internet access soon, but wouldn't mind an eager soul beating me to it.)
It does look cool. Not sure what the best taping order would be for the playa. I guess it partly depends on how many people are available. Effect of wind on flaps remains to be seen, and how do you fix it to the ground?

This design has never been built and I've never built a hexayurt, so I really can't help you.  It also depends on your construction material.  I'd look at the other hexayurt construction details, and base the door off their recommendations.

Gavin,

I have given your design a try. My first ever hexayurt attempt and it has come out pretty damn good.

There was only one real issue, due to the 1" thinkness of the panels there is a cumulative size size issue which means you have to shorten the two side panels by about 2". You can see the gap before I did that in one of the pics attached.

Size is perfect for 1-2 people and it seems to be very strong, will know how strong when taped on the playa.

Thanks for the design, I will send pics from BM when it is complete.

Hi hexapeeps,

I've been contemplating building an H2 until I saw this thread. How much tape would it take to build an H4 if you are trying to economize on tape? I have 1 roll, seemingly plenty for an H2. Would that be enough for an H4?

Thanks.
