I was working on a Spa concept for the Hexa-Plex, and discovered some interesting roof tiling options that got me really excited.  I've finally set up a file with the details and components.  basic principal is that you can take a half (stretch) yurt, drop the wall hight 4' and stick it on any side of a regular h12 and get a half-yurt's worth of floor space as an add on.  or 3 full yurts worth of add on if you go all the way around.  I'm calling that an 8' wing, cause the roof extends 8' further out.  it can be done as a 4' wing, with a 2' drop.  both pictured.  you can get the sketchup file from my website :

note that i am using hexa-pavillion, hexa-bustle, and wings semi-interchangably.  i am willing to streamline the language to anything people are comfortable with. i haven't been able to decide.

and if you ferro-cement the panels they are strong enough to use as a second story floor, if you make them flat instead of sloping down.  the uprights that support it could be more ferro-cemented styrofoam pillars, or ferro-cardboard might also work.  then you have an 8' wide deck that is up 8' off the ground, with all that space underneath too, which is at least a nice shady porch, or maybe enclosed as you show it too.

*waaaaaaooooo*

Dylan, these are *great*. Absolutely beautiful! We've gotta get these into the main website at some point, mebbe send the models to @jumplogic who did the animations and we can... yeah.

We need a catalogue of hexayurt options for people, maybe a Google Doc Presentation with diagrams and so on? Possibly?

Anybody going to take a crack at building them this year? :-)

Great work!

Vinay

How fun!  And I think it would look great with the H13 and a few modifications. Rubylaser

hey rubylaser,

there is an h13 in the sketchup file if you want to check it out how wings connect to an h13.
the two modded sides in the h13 are not as amenable to stretching, but if you are using that roof for joining another 13+ yurt, you can tile inwards with the same (h13) roof triangles.
two versions:

It's amazing to me to see, within a couple of days of each-other, a super-minimal 2 person hexayurt that Grandma could build because it doesn't have the complex roof (and boy-howdy won't that make a pretty folding system, with a single waterproof seam right along the top!) and these which are, frankly, evolving into an actual *architecture* - something with real aesthetic value and integration into a built environment.

Well done, well done, excellent.

Hi Dylan,

Amazing work. I am generating some sketches to add to the slideshow on hexayurt.com. I would like to make it the entirely stripped down style like the other models for the time being. I just wanted to get your okay before using your work without attributation. There is are talks for adding labels to the slides once a proper naming convention and name has been figured out for all the models and I would reintroduce the attributation if and when this happens.

Can't wait to see a real one made

Thanks
Razi

I think these configurations would work with my earth integrated log post and beam structure idea. Especially the first one, maybe the second one too. All water needs to shed to the downhill slope, earthen floor covered with polyethylene and carpet. Where is the sketchup file for these two?

Looks like my download manager broke with some wordpress update. (grumble, popular evolving platforms).
until i get that fixed, hopefully this attachment works.
