I'm using this bi-directional filament tape, http://hexayurttape.com/order-hexayurt-tape/ and it just peels off the long-sides of the RMAX 1.5 inch insulation foam.

I've dusted completely, and made sure it's applied evently & without bubbles.

Any ideas why this won't work for me?

Here are some possibilities (I assume the foam boards are foil-backed):

  1. Everything is too cold
  2. Foil is not clean (esp oils)
  3. Tape was applied before, and adhesive residue (rubber) was not removed.
  4. The tape is not really equivalent to 3M 8959, which is plenty sticky
  5. Are you trying to set up the hexayurt now, or just prep the edges?  If the latter, use foil tape.
  6. For semi-permanent joints, use 3M 8067.

Weather is in the mid-70s. Comfy.

These are new sheets - no tape ever applied.

If the tape is the wrong type - why is it listed as the tape that I should use?

Wait - you should use foil for the edges? I thought that should be applied AFTER the tape in order to protect it

How did I miss all this? I read & re-read the instructiuons?

Did you just cut the bevels? Any of the foam dust on the foil exterior could interfere with tape adhesion. I had the same problem and used a leaf blower to get rid of the loose stuff, but then had to use a painters tack cloth to remove the fine particles. The dust tends to cling stubbornly.

I'm wondering if there's not something being lost in the verbal exchange. If you're talking about a bare surface (no foil or tape on the board) of styrofoam rather than polyiso, that completely explains the non-stickiness.

Just asking...

Cheers,

I thought it was pretty good, but athletes don't think about history when making history. They think about what they're doing, and that's how it gets done.

The “correct” tape is 3M 8959.  That said, we all buy knock-offs.  I have bought knock-offs from two vendors, but not the one you listed.

Putting a layer of foil with a layer of bi-filament on the edges is an opinion.  Foil and bi-filament tape are complementary.  One has good puncture, shear and tensile strength, the other is UV and heat-resistant.  Foil tape will not deteriorate over many years.  Bi-filament tape holds up to UV and heat over a few outings.  So, do you shield the foil tape from punctures and tension with bi-filament, or do you shield bi-filament tape from UV with foil?

Nothing shields bi-filament from heat.  Note that 3M 8959 bi-filament tape is a packing tape and is not intended for outdoor applications.  Bi-filament’s weak point outdoors is the rubber adhesive.    I’ve tried acrylic adhesive tapes and they do better, but there is no such thing as the perfect tape.  3M 8959 is fine for burning man.

When I tried to use the bi-directional tape to secure my hexayurt I
had to use a spray adhesive on the panel to provide a sticky surface
for the bidirectional tape to stick to.

Now I use the bi-directional tape but secure it on both sides with
flex-fix tape which has a good adhesive. This gives the strength of
the Bi-directional tape with a good adhesive.
