wtf, it sticks to the foamy stuff but not to the foil. My neighbor saw my struggle and brought over a can of old school metal paint. its like liquid silver spray paint.

Tonight I coated 3 sides of 18 sheets of 1" stuff. can't remember the name of it right now. but... hopefully it will dry nicely and seal the moopy crumbly bits.

if the paint i put on is not too flammable and seals it... 1 can of paint was $10.  6 rolls of gorilla tape was $40.

why does it take 4 trips to home depot each burn?

Hmm.  I'd say there must be some 'Law of Fours' operating in your local universe, except, from the sound of this adventure, you may not be done yet.  Let us know what happens please?

I feel the Gorilla pain.
I used it on only one small board and it doesn't stick correctly.
If you can try the foil tape - about the same cost as gorilla and it
seems to work pretty well, read not perfect.
Much better than the Gorilla.

For taping the boards together and not just edging the Gorilla is
AMAZING.
I am sure it doesn't have the same strength as the bidirectional does
but it is still pretty damn good.

I thought I read in another posting, some cleaning with alcohol to
remove oils from the boards was necessary for the tape to stick right.
Did anyone try this with the Gorilla Tape?

Yes.

What I did when I discovered the Gorilla was not sticking properly is that a quick scrub with an alcohol soaked rag helps very much with tack. I did this to all of my edges, and the Gorilla tape is sticking in on 95% of the edges just fine. It takes some extra time but in my opinion, very much worth it.

I believe there is a coating on one side of the sheets that prevents the tape from sticking. 3" tape would be preferable, but the alcohol scrub works great.

Also, do not use Gorilla tape for final assembly on the Playa. I did a test run in my backyard here in Salt Lake City, and a mid 90 degree day, in the sun, melted the adhesive easily.

So here is the $64,000 question,
What is the best tape to seal the interior edges, exterior tarp edges?
(Not Structural part but Air and Light Leak parts)

Duct Tape, Gorrila Tape, Foil Tape, Gaffers Tape, Painters Tape,
Masking Tape, Clear Packing Tape, BiDirectional Filament Tape,
Electrical Tape.

Yes I mentioned some pretty ridiculous tapes above and I know some are
BAD but I did that on purpose. If I can get away with Masking tape
and get a great seal for playa dust, I am THERE.
I really like the Gorilla Tape for seams but not edges. I just don't
want to get to the Playa and have melty tape on my hands, literally.
Does the interior taping and the edge taping on the tarp provide some
structural purpose I am not aware of? I would NEVER substitute
something like masking tape to hold together the Hexayurt. I just
don't want whatever tape I decide to use to have it fall off, blow
off, melt off, until the day I pack up. So 7 to 10 days later.

I really want to say THANK YOU to everyone on this group for all the
help you have given me during this project. It made it possible and
actually easy for a non-builder to do. Also big thanks to Vinay Gupta
for this amazing project.

Hi Rich, I used 2" foil tape (avail. at the Home Depot -- emeryville)
which was totally wide enough to cover the edges and worked like a
charm. occasionally it pulls away from the foil covering of the
boards, but if pressure is applied it goes right back done and sticks
really well. I think the rolls are 40 yards and cost about $14. We
also purchased furnace insulation 'cartridges' which were 1" thick and
fight very nicely in our window cuts in the 1" panels. See you and the
Playa! Masala

I am talking about the playa sealing tape for the tarp and inside. I
am guessing we will all arrive around the same time and be taping up
with similar tape.
It is indeed just one side of the board for me as well just checked
yesterday i will wipe it down tonight with alcohol. That should do
the trick.

c u there.

I'll be using the 6" filament tape for the tarp-to-walls seal and full assembly.

I know there is a fire hazard with the filament tape, but I will not be using any candles or the like in my yurt so I'm not concerned. We'll also have extinguishers on hand.

That 6" filament tape from findtape.com is EXTREMELY nice, thin and sticky. After handling it and taping up a couple things, I have no worries about the structure on the playa.

The caution was against using bi-filament tape to tape your yurt edges and to make sure you cover the bi-filament with foil tape inside and outside to reduce the hazard of fire. The bi-filament tape is really flammable and makes your boards burn with fury if they should catch fire.

Hello Rich,

Would you please help me with a few questions that I have? I didn't
want to confuse the thread further by posting on the board so am
writing to you personally.  Did you ever get an answer (if so, I'm
missing it) as to what tapes you should use on the inside of yurt?
Specifically:  Inside of yurt, should I use bi-directional from panel-
to-panel?  And can I use Gorilla from tarp to panel???

Someone out there said we should NOT use something on the inside, and
I can't find that post anywheres... Do you know the answer to this?
Maybe that was Spiral....

I hope to meet you all on the Playa - you have been great.  My hexy
will have an el-wire running dog on on side - that's my plan for now

We did a test-run of the bidirectional filament tape
both out at El Mirage (about 90F) and in our back
yard for a week at 100+ temperatures. It held up
great. It's a little costly, but since we ordered it
by the case, well, *shrug*

:) Connie-Lynne

P. S. We should have an extra roll or two with us out
on the playa if anyone finds themselves fucked.

Awesome! I will be bringing the better part of an 8-pack. I can help out in a pinch as well.

we might JUST be in a pinch out there...only able to get 3 rolls of 6" shipped before the burn, otherwise depending on gorilla tape, foil tape...and really hoping my friend comes through with that last roll of 6 inch bidirectional....

If you're really in a pinch, additional straps going across the boards (not just down the seams, but across in bands) of the 1 inch or 2 inch reinforced packing tape they sell in box stores will certainly help.

It's a hack, but filament tape is filament tape, at the end of the day.

Josh and others, I have at least a case extra case of 6” Bi Fil. Our base camp is at 7:15 and Laffing Sal, right on the friggin street. Until Thurs morn, there will be a Dutchman RV parked there, a couple trailers, perhaps a U Haul . . . . AND a hexayurt if the friggin wind cuts off a bit.
