Hi,

A couple fellow campers of mine from Flowers and the Dusty Rhino (10:00 and Initiation) are looking to build 3 hexayurts this year, most likely one H13 model and two standard 8' hexayurts honeycombed at the rear of the H13.  We are still working out the details on how to connect them and if we can reduce the number of panels needed with the adjacent walls.

Would anyone be interested in the following group buy if we can get a significant discount?  I am still working on finding the best deal in the Bay Area for larger quantities.
  • Purchasing Thermax HD or similar panels, 1.5" - 2" thick
  • 6" Bi-directional filament tape
  • 3" Bi-directional filament tape
  • 4" foil tape
  • Playa staples
  • anything else hexayurt related that I'm missing

It would also be great to do a SF Bay Area group build day so that we can share our tips and tricks in person!  We have a space in the American Steel building in West Oakland and access to a warehouse in the dogpatch neighborhood of SF.

Let's save some $$$ and get building!

Dusty,

I'd love to jump into a group buy for my standard 8-footer. The only thing I'd add to your shopping list would be 3" foil tape for the edges. BTW, what do you mean by "Playa staples"? Is that vernacular for U-shaped rebar? Either way, you'll want to put plenty of rebar on your list.

Further suggestion: building solar-powered swamp coolers for the yurts. I'd love to turn out a couple of those. Maybe one of the cooler-meisters on this list can be persuaded to show up, or at least provide a definitive parts list.

I'd love to join in a yurt-bee. I can bring my rebar-bending skills and turn out authoritative U-stakes like crazy. Also, I have done a regulation 8-footer. Experience tells!

Cheers,
Steve

I would be interested to come in on this. I live in Portland and would have to plan a road trip to pick it up, but depending on the price (or my share if it), I'm all in. Willing to wait, too: having built one for a friend out of polyiso, I want for myself the Thermax HD. Sounds like it may not get pulled together before the burn anyway.

But yeah: copy this email and keep me in the loop.

I'm down to throw in, I know the tape needs to be ordered ahead of time so I can do that.  I want to try and schedule a time to do a trial build so we don't do this for the first time on the playa.  Regardless of who throws down to contribute this will be a good time to see what goes into doing one of these for us newbies!  There's a few places we can do the trial build too.  Both are in large well endowed warehouses so lets set some dates.  I'm thinking when the tape arrives...

Hey Clark
Great initiative. I'd be in for 13 panels. (got everything else
covered)

I won't be arriving in the Bay Area until Sat Aug.27 but could pick up
anytime that weekend.

For all you last-minute wonder builders out there - how about a Sunday
Aug.28 HexaBee in SF?

thanks

Have you all found a good source for the Thermax HD? I've been looking all over and can't find it. I'd potentially be down for 26 panels if we find a good source.

Thanks,
Kevin

We're coming from Boulder, CO, and would be down to put in a group
order for Thermax HD panels with others in the Boulder/Denver area.

Any takers?

p.s. Should I start a new post?

Hi All,

Just to update everyone on the group buy...

I'd like to nail down the total number of panels and rolls of tape we all need early this week, so I can get exact pricing and finalize the order. To simplify the group buy, I need to keep it limited to SF Bay Area hexayurters. Sorry, there's just way too much to do before the burn!

How to participate in the group buy:
  1. PM me with you exact order no later than Wednesday July 27th (# of panels, thickness of panels, rolls of each kind of tape) and the latest date that you need it by.
  2. Once I have the total estimates, I'll send everyone a copy and we'll arrange payment (cash/check will work, no PayPal pls).
  3. Please be prepared to arrange payment in advance of order date (tentatively July 29th).  I am in SF or Oakland everyday to meet.
  4. Order is placed and delivered to our warehouse in Oakland.
  5. We have very limited storage at our workspace, so you would need to pick up the materials soon after they are delivered.  However, we can arrange a build day in August at American Steel in Oakland if people are interested in that.
  6. We are leaving to the Playa on Thursday August 25th with a uhaul box truck and there may be space to transport your yurt with some gas money. :)
Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions for coordinating our buy.

Onward!

Clark,

You are awesome for putting this together. What type of panels are you planning on buying?

Hopefully Thermax HD 1.5" panels, but I'm having trouble finding a distributor that's anywhere near SF.  Shipping from LA or Vegas will most likely negate any savings from a group buy.  If anyone can help with the search for Thermax HD from Dow, I'd really appreciate it.

Second choice is R-Max 1.5" or 2" panels. Those are much easier to find...

While I haven't found a retailer yet, I was pointed in the direction of two places that definitely won't have it in stock, but may very well have access to a supplier to order however many panels you'd like:

Hi Everyone,

Long story short, the group buy is off. :-(  My sincere apologies.

After searching high and low around the Bay Area and calling Dow multiple times, I cannot source Thermax HD even with our group order of 165-200 panels.  The two quotes I received came in at $75 per 1.55" thick sheet not including freight!  Minimum order is a full truckload which=350 panels coming from Indiana with a lead time of 4 weeks.

Two other options are:
1) Rmax TSX8500 - Reinforced on one side with fiberglass layer and thicker foil facer, higher fire rating $40/ 1.5" sheet. No discount for bulk purchase. http://www.rmaxinc.com/downloads/DataSheets/TSX8500.pdf
2) Rmax Thermasheath-3 - Regular rigid polyiso board, no fire rating, thinner foil facer (more prone to punctures) $27/ 1.5" sheet. No discount for bulk purchase, but easy to find in the SF area.

As much as I wanted to coordinate a group buy for our materials, it seems that we will not see any significant savings for the panels or the tape.  I'm really sorry that this isn't going to work out but I'd love to make a group build day happen the weekend of August 20th. I'll send out more details next week on the build day.

Buy HexaComb instead.   You have to buy it in bulk (but looks like you are coordinating a group buy) but its way better then the nasty foam thremax.  I led a build of 20 yurts last year out of this and it was a roaring success.

You buy the boards here.  They will be delivered freight - somebody needs a big garage and either a a couple of hands to unload the truck, or a lift to pull out the pallet.

You tape this foil to the outside of the board:

Don't waste your time glueing it - its gets so hot outside that there is no glue that can stand up to the heat.  Tape works great.

This setup is epic.  They stay cooler then the thermmax by many degees as the silver coating on the thermax refelcts body heat in - in the same way as it reflects it out.   I slept 6 hours a day in one of these last year.

Cost of these sheets should be about $20/each, plus foil @ $5 - so about $25/panel...not bad.  I think we group sourced total yurts last year for $500/each including tape, rebar, windows etc.   Likely slightly more this year, but you get the idea.

I also have 2 used fully assembled yurts I am willing to sell @$350 each.  They are in used condition (each has 1 burning man under its roofs) and you'll need to buy some bi-directional filament tape for taping it together on the playa.   both of the yurts probably have a cracked door board (very common injury when setting up, so be careful!), but this was not a problem on the playa - the structure held together perfectly.    If I can't get $350, I'll probably just let them live in my garage for another year.   Probably a great option for an out-of-towner who wants to pick it up in San Francisco enroute to the burn.

If your interested, send me a private note...if I dont respond it means they are gone.

Good luck!

-susan

Susan,

Thanks for tip on the HexaComb.  Do you think this would be a strong enough panel for the larger/taller yurts like the H13?  I really like the idea of going foam free for our yurts but I don't know if the 1" thickness will be enough to keep things together through high winds with taller hexayurts.

What style yurts are the ones you are selling?  I may have some campmates that would be interested.

Susan, were you there for the rain last year? If so, how did the hexacomb hold up to the weather?

My hexayurt did great in the rain.   A couple of people had leakage (their tape job wasn't too strong - so tape smoothly people) - but it was so hot that the cardboard dried up instantly.

Per the strength - these boards are pretty darn rigid.   We did the 8' yurts, which are quite massive, and they held fine.   They are way more rigid then the 1" thermax.   They are made be Pregis - you can order a thicker board (1.5 inches) but you have to order a lot of boards to meet their minimimums.   And you have to have a business EIN to order direct.

I'm selling the 8' yurt - let me know if anybody wants one.

Cheers,
Susan
