I'm curious if anyone has cut their tarp to be a hexagon so it can wrap around the yurt and get taped up to the walls?  Camp Danger recommends this method, but doesn't go into much detail.  I'm afraid the tarp will fray if I cut it with scissors, and make it even worse if I tape it to the yurt (as when I remove that, it will probably destroy the frayed ends of the tarp).  If need be, I'll ruin a tarp so I can have a rainproof yurt, but I'd prefer it if my tarp can last another year (or several!).  Does anyone have any experience doing this or any pro tips?  I have a 20'x20' silver tarp which I'm thinking of cutting to size, but about 6" longer so it can be taped up to the walls.

It's my understanding that the tarp would be taped onto the INSIDE of the yurt, therefore be out of the weather.  Because of this, I've decided to use 3" painters tape to attach the tarp to the walls.  I'll have another tarp that will serve as a ground cover that I'll stake down flat to the playa.  Combined, I think I'll do fine.

Definitely tape tarp to the OUTSIDE of the yurt, folded up about 6" all around.  We put contact paper along the bottom of the yurt (Danger trick again) to keep if from ripping up the yurt when disassembled.

I too have concerns about cutting my tarp down, but I saw Julie's and it seemed fine.  We haven't done so because we are still too busy with other stuff.  Maybe tape or heat will seal those fraying edges if that happens.  Let me know if you try it out in the next 24 hours.

I roughly trimmed mine to 6-9" and use wide painters tape to stick it
to the outside of the yurt. Taping to the outside seems to add
tension, pulling the walls together, and it keeps the dust and rare
rainfall out too. Does it make a huge amount of difference whether
it's inside or outside? Marginally? Maybe? *shrug*

That said, to save you effort, cutting nice straight edges in the tarp
will make the tape job easier. If you're concerned about fraying or
want to win the Tarp of the Year prize, make your cut against a 2x4 or
straight edge, then move the 2x4 over, and run a heat gun down the
edge. The tarp will melt right up against the 2x4 leaving you a
perfectly straight line that won't fray.

I've never liked the idea of using so much tape to seal the walls to the tarp floor. Inside or outside, you'll have some adhesion problems with the playa dust, and a lot of tape to cut off when you're ready to break down. I just applied two parallel strips of peel 'n stick foam door insulation to the bottom edge of my walls before I left home (i.e., pre-playa dust). The foam does a good job of sealing the walls for dust, so once the yurt is up and staked down you're done. No, I haven't been able to test this yet in a rain storm, but I think it would work OK for occasional showers.

Peel n' stick foam under the walls. Clever.

Last year I went with the green painters tape. It went on, stayed on
all week, and came off easily – no cutting necessary. I've used the
blue stuff in prior years and it was fine, too.

Starting with wide tape (2"+) makes for less waste. When I tried using
anything narrower, I had to put down multiple swaths.

Cheers,
