2 questions
1. Does the rope halo replace the tape anchors?
2. Is there a tutorial on making the rope halo written up videoed or
described anywhere online?

I am taking my 6' high 6' honeycomb cardboard stretch hexayurt again
to BM and I need to coat the cardboard for potential rain issues.
When I have painted the cardboard in the past the bidirectional tape
no longer stuck.

I need to detail my build from 2 years ago and the updates from this
year. I am exploring zippers from the post a few days ago.
I see several advantages to cardboard and the primary one is drawing
painting or decorating it. It's all about the ART!!! heheh. There
are disadvantages to it like rain :(
Oh and build cost is much much less than insulation as strong paper
tape is cheap and the panels are much less money. Catch a free
shipping sale from Uline and the costs go under $15 per 4 X 8 1" thick
sheet delivered.

Thanks everyone for all the help over the years.

I'm also interested in more info on making a rope halo - I've not been able to find much info online so far.

I was planning to use a loop of 550 paracord for the rope halo, secured with 3x ratcheting tie-downs and 3x buckle tie downs.  Does this sound about right??

Its gonna be a bit more expensive than just using rope, but I figure the ratcheting tie-downs will save some time on construction and make adjustments easy.

I never worked with a rope halo, but I whole-heartedly recommend ratchet straps. We purchased 6 with hooks on either end. We bent rebar like canes. We threaded the straps through our tape anchors. The hooks on the ends nicely grab the rebar. Just feed the strap through the ratchet until the strap is relatively tight, give the ratchet a few cranks and you're done. I'm willing to bet it took me longer to type this than it would take to secure one of these in place.
The best part is you only need to give one or two ratchet clicks during the week to snug it up as it settles and the straps stretch some. Doing that with rope is a pain.

I'm thinking of using 6 tie down straps to secure the rope halo.
Using the hooks to tie in to the halo, and the middle of the strap
looping through the rebar candy canes.

If i was going to do this with six ratcheting tie downs how long would
I need them to be?

Also, any ideas for protecting the edges of the yurt the tie downs
would be rubbing against?

Also, do you think it necessary to wrap the rebar in something so the
tie down straps aren't being worn thru?

Much love to this group,

Climbing ropes, especially those with a core that is not visible, are sometimes laid over carpeting so the sharp edge of the rock doesn't wear them out.  That would probably work for the rebar.

Maybe a thicker carpeting mat would work for the roof/wall edge?  Or maybe the force of the tie down would still damage the edge, so something to spread the force out over a longer distance might be needed.  If you could safely split a plastic pipe down the middle that might work, like with a band saw?  Cutting plastic pipe that way is a recipe for cutting your hand open too, so be careful.

I was thinking of using a cargo net, the kind you use on top of your auto or truck rack as the 'halo' and ratchet straps on the edges of it to pull the net tight across the top. From reading this, though, I'm thinking I will have a problem with tension being applied by the straps on the top edges of the roofline. I have two cargo nets...perhaps I can stretch them over the roofline so they won't pull on it directly.

I'm planning on doing a rope halo this year, which will go as follows:

My loop is going to have 5.5' radius and tied into a water bowline, then the excess rope leading out from this knot will serve as my first tie down rope. The radius of the loop means I can reach my bowline knot to check it throughout the week as well.

I'm planning on running an additional 3 lines from my loop to rebar stakes.

I have candycaned rebar, but I tie to carabiners, which I hook onto the rebar to prevent fraying. I use the standard trucker's hitch to tie to the rebar to easily add tension throughout the week.

Any comments or suggestions regarding this setup are welcome :)

Cheers,
Elliot

Elliot - that sounds like a good plan.  I'm gonna check out your knots as you seem to have a good idea of whats going to work.

How about folks take some pictures of their rope halos in action and post them and their experiences after the burn?  That way we can figure out what works and what doesn't work, and put together a wiki page with best practices.

I'm happy putting together the info post-BM if other folks are willing to chip in with some info & pictures :)

Who's in?

I'm up for it. We'll see if I remember during the anarchy of the burn though :P
