Hi -
There are widespread reports that the bi-fil tape (mostly the 6” variety) used for assembling yurts was problematic this year. The claims are that the “white” (vs. clear) tape lacked initial adhesion, and deteriorated / de-adhered much more quickly. (I experienced this.)
Several of the retail tape vendors are taking the current situation a bit on the chin in various email lists & Facebook groups. As a result, some of those vendors have indicated they simply may not stock bi-fil in preparation for next year’s burn in order to avoid product complaints. This puts yurt use in 2019 at major risk.
Of course, the vendors are just selling what the (offshore) manufacturers are providing; so the issue is with the manufacturers, not the retailers. One of the retailers who consciously works closely with the burning man community (Tape Jungle) is digging hard into this in order to avoid such issues next year.
To do so, Aaron wants to collect samples from burners of BOTH types of tape - that which you feel worked well in prior years (and which still feels tacky / sticky / good), and which did NOT work well this year - so he can do proper testing to discover actual performance, and formulation discrepancies.
But, he is seeking representative samples. If you have a full, or partial roll of either or both that you’re willing to send *back* to this vendor, please RSVP to me directly and I’ll help coordinate how to get them to Aaron. If you purchased the tape from Tape Jungle, Aaron is willing to refund you for that roll.
Please consider helping here. Given that the current issues put at risk the entire supply of yurt tape in 2019, helping us nail this down will help all people expecting to use hexayurts next year.
Thanks in advance
