Like many children of the nineties I attended a cram school to prepare for the dreaded SAT tests in high school. While I didn't retain much of the actual information I studied, I do remember some of the techniques. One of them was the "Broken Compass" approach. If you know you're terrible at geometry, and you can't eliminate any of the answer options, than you're left to a blind guess. But if you've surmised that you're not likely to guess the right answer, you could theoretically take you're best guess, and choose the opposite answer. Now, you've identified a weakness, and you can choose where to travel from there. I always liked the poetic symbolism of a broken compass, and I was able to find a better application of it to my style of management and culture-building.

A "Broken Compass" can be as simple as learning from a mistake you made, or a complicated deep dive into learning from past leadership. We all have managers and supervisors who weren't the greatest fit for us. Some of these managers may be great for other types of employees, and others may just be toxic and should be avoided at all costs. Regardless of your situation, you can hone in on what made that style of leadership abrasive for you and travel in the opposite direction when it's your time to lead. In other words, use those negative experiences to educate your current decisions. It may seem simple and obvious, but in both work relationships, and social relationships we're often doomed to repeat what we were conditioned to believe in the first place. However, if we can truly identify the behaviors, and words, and strategies that failed us in the past, there's a good chance we can chart a better course for our future.

Broken compasses can be found everywhere, even in creative processes. If you have a member of your team that disagrees with an idea, feels unsure, or generally doesn't 'get it.' That may not constitute a failure, it may actually be a sign that you're traveling in the right direction. In today's marketing world where we've already blasted past millennial marketing and onto Gen Z, broad strokes and assumptions simply won't cut it. Brands are expected to have a stance, have a story, and to go deep into subcultures. So if the most vanilla-pumpkin-spice member of your team can't wrap their head around an idea, but the creative adrenaline junkies of your team are pumped, you may have a good idea of where you're broken compass is pointing to.

But just like everything, a broken compass is a moving target. Just because the compass is pointing one way this month, doesn't mean it will stay there. We'll always have relationships and projects to massage and manage, but pausing to see the big picture is always beneficial. At the end of the day, it's about knowing what you're weaknesses are and not getting sucked into a cycle. As we grow and collect our years of experience, we can take a look at all our broken compasses and each one will remind us that we're traveling in the right direction.

Map validation - Grims Broken Compass. Factory

I just downloaded your map and had a quick look at it in the Editor to know what to expect. Are you aware that the editor has a map validation function and that it lists quite a few unreachable objects? Are they 'broken' on purpose?

The map I downloaded has v3 in its file name, but I see in earlier opinions that there was already e.g. v8.3, so is it the latest version that can be downloaded here?

Thank you anyways for the map, it shows great potential to me.

Yes, some thing are purely cosmetic and/or very hard to reach on purpose.

Yes, the newest versions will from now on start with an "x" and I have since then started over to count from the beginning.

grim impossible ass factory heroes 3 - Grims Broken Compass. Factory 1.7

I just tried the map.I saw that there are several versions.I played "grim impossible ass factory" on 200% with red and starting army - "Factory" cleared it in 6 months. It was a bit tricky and i used some loads until i find the best route, but it was nice and chalanging. Are the other versions easier ?

I played red with factory

Hi Peter! I'm glad that you liked it! Yes that was the hardest difficulty of the old version. A newer version is now uploaded and all of the versions have gotten harder. You should also try to play as the other teams as they all start and play very different from each other. Thank you!

Exactly - Grims Broken Compass. Factory 1.7

Exactly! By every hero that is found on the map - there is a quest to kill him.

If you come to a place where a hero is already claimed - then you can collect the bounty on him.

When I play with friends we all know where the heroes are so it becomes a tactical choice that you will have to make. Sometimes you might claim a hero and sometimes you might just stick around to try claim the bounty. When a hero with a powerful bounty is spotted it becomes a duckhunt, so claiming a powerful hero that you will have trouble keeping is a risky move if you have insufficient army.

When you and your friends know your way around the map you will be able to make more tactical choices. All of the teams are playable and there are many paths to victory.

quests - Grims Broken Compass. Factory 1.7

There are many prisons and quests to kill someone from the prison. Does it mean that if I save the prisoner I cannot kill it myself to complete the task?

The difference in difficulties affects AI resources. The AI will gain much more resources on Impossible than on Easy.

I'm looking at making other changes to difficulties as well in future updates.

Another update will be available soon, I just haven't had the time to finish it yet. Maybe at the end of this weekend. I will make an post when it's uploaded.

Thank you!

The map is now updated and also a bit harder!

There is no need to go underground, but you can use the dungeons to your advantage if needed. A very experienced player as yourself might not need it but the option is still there.

Try another starting color as they all provide a different experience.

This map is also great to play with friends! (This will for sure give you a challenge)

Thank you!

Hi! Yes necro is the easiest to play on this map as it says in 'lobby-description' i recommend the other factions for veteran players to get a challenge. Some weak artifacts are obtainable with fly and DD, the strong ones is protected. Thank you!

Spell banning - Grims Broken Compass 6.5

Let me explain you something. If you ban some spell in map specifications in HotA they won't appear anywhere (I mean castles, tomes etc.) Even you selected them in all castles. They can only appear if you set it on some magic shrine (there is also magic shrines level 4 in HotA), via spell scroll or via event. It's not like in Complete or Shadow of Death where you can ban spell in map specifications and they can appear in tomes or in aurora borealis. So you don't need to ban that spell in each castle in HotA. You banned only DD and Armageddon in map specifications and you lost time banning that spells again in all castles. You should do that for fly, TP, water walk etc. But you don't need to ban it in castles if you ban it in map specifications. Best regards.

Town portal spell - Grims Broken Compass 6.5

Hmm, you set that all colors can be human? Because red and teal still can get town portal spell in their main castle. Others not.

Thank you very much! I'm glad you liked it! :D Yes dominating either of the floors will give huge reward and there is many tactics to use! Try playing different teams they all play very differently and even more so if you play with a friend :D

Haha yes TP and Fly is a killercombo! I really like to play this map with friends because then you will have to prioritize way more and your friends will also go for those stuff and it often results in tactics and huge battles :) But I will look into it and keep on updating.

Nice! I really like playing as them! My new favourite right now in the updated version is teal :)

Thank you!

DD is banned and is only found through either Quests or in the store for a very heavy price. - It's pretty hard to get right now and you will probably only get it late lategame when everybody is pretty maxxed?

I like to keep Fly available because it makes the game faster and the bots are pretty good at using it as well but I will look into it and maybe block it from mageguild and restrict it to only be available in quests and from map?

All those things should be fixed by now in the new version except Ambushes which indeed sucks ;)

Thank you very much!!

There is an image that has stayed with me over the past few years. An image of a girl whose face is streaked with tears. In her hands she holds pieces of shattered glass and a tiny little arrow, all of this is red from the cuts upon her skin. It is all that is left of her compass. The girl had clutched it far too tightly within her sweaty palm, so as she stumbled on, watching for the coming dawn, it slipped right through her fingers.

Over the passed few years, that image became a poem, and that poem became a prayer. I learned that there are many shiny compasses in this world and each one wants to show you the way. But there is only One who is the Way, Truth, and Life, and He alone can guide us to the light.
