hi guys

congrats to the new CoM.

as money is needed to get the club up & running once more, it would be
useful to do some fundraising activities to (a) keep the profile of
our campaign up and (b) to minimise the amount of business loans
possibly required etc.

my background is in the local music scene so I'm up for helping put a
fundraiser gig on. i'm sure the promoters & bands who used the club
would be only too happy to help.

I'm sure other people have other ideas how to raise money, so let's
hear them!

I'm happy to help organise poetry/comedy/cabaret gigs once the club is open. Much more difficult before then as we'd need to ask a venue to help raise funds in order to open up a rival.

Is there also an issue that major fundraising may be needed for
repairs to the building? If we could raise money or get people to
pledge money then the university might be more willing to allow us
back in, as the university won't need to spend their own money. I've
heard that it could cost 75,000 pounds, which is a lot. But there are
a lot of people on Facebook (2000), 200 other supporters on e-mail and
many more people who signed the petition who are not on either. There
are also bound to be many more, such as alumni, who would be willing
and able to help; such a route was suggested by Charles Kennedy at the
rector's surgery and in his letter a couple of weeks ago. If we got a
campaign going we could get 2000 people to pledge 10 pounds, any some
like me and others to pledge more, I think we could raise at least
30,000 pounds (and perhaps the university could pay for the rest since
it's their building?). People will only pledge however, if there is a
good long-term business plan for the Club. If we use facebook
intelligently, we could use those who are members of the group to get
to others who could also give (think of how many members there must be
over the last 30 years).

Hi Nick

I have never heard of the need for the Club to raise money to repair
the building, or indeed of a need for major repairs to be done to the
Club. I wonder if there is a confusion here. There were plans to
develop the basement, which would have taken money. The Club applied
to the Uni for this, and was turned down. Maybe this is the £75,000
you heard about? If so then, while nice, this extension is by no
means something that should be focussed on at the moment, as John
Ewing pointed out in another thread. It's just not necessary. In the
short term, it may also not even be desirable.

Hi Sarah,

People at the first Monday meeting and in some discussions have stated
that there are various repairs that need to be done to the building,
although I'm not exactly sure what these entail (except that they may
involve the top of the building, and maybe the back?). I'm pretty sure
that the £75,000 I was told about was for repairs rather than any new
extension, but the reliability of the figure isn't clear to me. As the
owner of the building the university should make a substantial
contribution to any work, but if it is an issue, anything the Club
could do would strengthen its chances of getting the building back.
What I am concerned about is that paying for repairs could be a
surprise issue that comes up and scuppers the business plan, so it
would be good to get information from the university about this
(hopefully to confirm that it is not an issue!)
