I will be chairing the Finance Sub-Committee.

INITIAL STEPS
Sensible and robust financial projections will need to be included as
part of the Business Plan presented to the University. These will need
to demonstrate the financial viability of the club should the business
be reopened. This will involve profit and loss statements/balance
sheets and cash flow forecasts together with details of the likely
initial funding required.

ONGOING
One of the main roles of the Treasurer (me) is to ensure that
management accounts are prepared promptly and accurately and I intend
to put in place sufficient accounting systems and controls to enable
these to be produced.

I have spent over 20 years as a chartered accountant, mainly working
in audit and accountancy, so my experience will be put to good use!

GET INVOLVED!
If you think you would like to be involved, post to this group.

I'm willing to help. I can provide detailed information about the
financial systems and procedures that were in place in the 1980s. I'm
not saying that they should all be re-adopted as they were, but they
did work. Many of course were standard procedure in the licensed
trade. I also have other relevant knowledge and experience, but I
won't bore people with that here (yet).

Hi Mhairi

I don't have the time to do much. However, as a former Hon Treas,
I'll offer you the limited help I can give. I also know of another
former Hon Treas who will say the same - and who will be far more help
than me.

Hey Mhairi,

Just posting to note my interest, as it were. As has been mentioned
before I think we'll have a fair bit of crossover between our sub-
committees, reckon it'd be profitable to get together to rough out
some best practice docs?

Cheers,
s

Has anyone got sets of signed off, audited accounts from pre 2005? As
the club has not made a profit for the last 5 years (except for £5k in
2007) I would be interested in seeing exactly how profitable the club
may have been prior to this.

Thanks

Mhairi

Somewhere I have the accounts for all of the 1980s, and for some other
years as well. I have found a summary of the profit / loss figures for
some years. Bear in mind that the overall plan was to break even each
year; profits made were generally to be ploughed back in to the Club,
but a small surplus was allowed to accumulate.

Figures in brackets are losses

1980 - (807) - but I'm not certain of this figure
1981 - 2229
1982 - 4575
1983 - 1720
1984 - (381)
1985 - 604
1986 - 3188
1987 - 1608
1988 - (614)
1989 - (4762)
1990 - (528)
1991 - 4594
1992 - (183)

Thanks John. Would be interested to see the full accounts, can pick them up from uni if you're around at some point.

I said I've got the accounts _somewhere_ :-) The figures I gave
were from a note I'd made in the 90s when I was analysing the
finances. I've found two filing boxes with HH stuff, but I don't know
where I've put other information (including a copy of the original
1954 constitution). If I find the documents I'll let you know, but I
don't have time to search for them.
