If I wasn't getting an email every time a new post was posted I'd have
no idea how to navigate this. It lists posts that I have posted as new
to me. And it doesn't indicate which discussions have posts I've not
seen

It told me that I have 11 new discussions "Since last time" half of
which have only one message in them, which I posted...

I've never used the web interface to it, other than to manage a list -- I always interact with these lists exclusively by email. I tend to think of it, in fact, as a mailing list manager with a funky archive.

I hadn't realised that you could post to the group via the web. Oooh, lookit that...

yeah I started off doing via the web but have resorted to using email.

Coupled with how Gmail manages conversations it's pretty nifty.

Never used them before, but the discussion here is civil and reasoned,
so that must be a good thing.

Ha! At least it doesn't think you're in 1989 and won't let your
messages go through without moderator approval!

It may not be perfect but moving to a different forum now would be
suicide.

I didn't have that problem? Is it banning messages? Are other people having this problem?

I think Seumas is having issues because it doesn't like his beard...

Using it from email is much better.

Apparently it now thinks I'm in 1992 - an improvement I suppose. '2
Unlimited' and all that.

Norman tells me he's fixed the problem by some form of technical
fiddling. I guess we'll wait and see!

It's not great, but it's better (in technical terms, though not in
participation) than Facebook which has very little threading. The
advantages of this group over (say) a phpBB forum are that it's free,
and it's accessible to anyone with a Google account (which most
probably already have for Docs/Scholar if not Gmail).

Another thing is that people tend to behave better, and write better, on email than on forums (it's probably an interesting HCI project to work out why).

You don't even need a Google account -- you need never go near the web interface, and the account I'm subscribed on (for example) is not my google account. To subscribe, you only need to send a blank email to hetheringtonclub-...@googlegroups.com.

(You have to have a google account to create or manage a list, but not to participate)
