I've never used the web interface to it, other than to manage a list -- I always interact with these lists exclusively by email. I tend to think of it, in fact, as a mailing list manager with a funky archive.

Norman tells me he's fixed the problem by some form of technical

Another thing is that people tend to behave better, and write better, on email than on forums (it's probably an interesting HCI project to work out why).

You don't even need a Google account -- you need never go near the web interface, and the account I'm subscribed on (for example) is not my google account. To subscribe, you only need to send a blank email to hetheringtonclub-...@googlegroups.com.
(You have to have a google account to create or manage a list, but not to participate)
