I received an email from Nicholas Evans today (not sure who that is),
which is a copy of an email he got from David Newall. I thought we
could keep all such sorts of feedback and remarks on the evolution of
the University's support in the present thread.

The attached email mentions the business plan and the university's
interest in re-opening the club.
It is not big news, but it can be useful to have the primary sources.

Dear Nicholas

Many thanks for sending the petition regarding the Hetherington Club.

I appreciate the work you and colleagues have put into gathering
signatures, and that there is a large number of colleagues, staff and
students, who regret the closure of the Hetherington and would like to
see a similar postgraduate facility into the future.

The University's managers are also disappointed at the Hetherington's
closure and we have stated that we will give serious consideration
should a business plan be submitted seeking support to re-establish a
Postgraduate Club. Such a plan will require to be robust, particularly
in the light of the business difficulties experienced by the
Hetherington. One aspect we would be concerned to test is the likely
level of demand for a Postgraduate Club and in that respect the
petition is very helpful.

Best wishes

David Newall

Interesting,

very cagey language. Not going to do any textual analysis quite yet though.

Thanks for this.

Tom

He makes a good point on ascertaining the need for the pgc. We need to
quote how many people signed the petition. Joined the facebook
group, and turned up to the meetings. As well as figures for eligible
members when we are making a case for the club reopening.

Classic Newell, any statement could mean three different things.
Still, at least he's actually engaging in dialogue.

Hi

Nick is the person who organised a petition that many of us returned
to him with as many signatures as we could quickly get.

Omar - I don't think quoting how many folk joined the FB pages is
relevant. What we need is folk who will use the Club if we can get it
back.

On that note, I think that figures for PGs and staff are available.
To my knowledge (and, as ex-Exec of both the Club and the MSA I asked
for this) figures for mature students are not available. However, as
has been pointed out, the main concern of the Uni is for a facility
for PGs. Can you get a figure for that? I suspect that will suffice.

Actually I think that every source where people have shown support for
the Club is encouraging. Facebook, the Petition, the EGM, this very
forum; all of these, when combined, show a broad and far reaching
support for re-opening the Club, and the diversity of the medium
reflect the diversity of the membership.

As to the numbers for PGs and others, I agree that it is crucial to
stress this in a business plan to show the potential for membership.

What he said. A line in the business plan that states how quickly we garnered the support of over 2000 former members. Using technology and new social media can only help our cause.

It shows that we are forward thinking and that we are willing to explore new avenues of keeping in touch with the membership.

Hi all,

In, I assume, everyone's University email accounts, but worth noting.
What sort of contact have we had, and how can we get in contact with
Mr Kennedy in order to try and gain his support (I know he has already
given it). How likely is he to help change anything?

Tom

"The University Rector, Charles Kennedy, will be holding a surgery on
Friday 26th March 2010, from 11.30-12.30pm, in the SRC Advice Centre,
Ground floor, John McIntyre Building.

Please come along and raise any issues with Charles who will be able
to
take these on at a University or national level.

The surgery is a drop-in session so no appointment is necessary.

Further dates will be advertised in due course."
