The therns for their part have temples dotted about the entire civilizedworld. Here priests whom the people never see communicate the doctrine of theMysterious River Iss, the Valley Dor, and the Lost Sea of Korus to persuade thepoor deluded creatures to take the voluntary pilgrimage that swells the wealthof the Holy Therns and adds to the numbers of their slaves.

In February 2013 Chronicle City announced that they were working with the German publisher Uhrwerk Verlag/Clockwork Publishing on a new English edition of Space: 1889, which is based on the German edition from 2011 which uses the Ubiquity ruleset.[6] In December 2014 Uhrwerk Verlag cut their ties with Chronicle City and continued the translation of the new English edition on their own.[7] The PDF of the English Ubiquity core rulebook was released in October 2014,[8] the print edition in November 2015.[9]

172. And so, dear brothers, with the ardent wish that peace may come upon the flocks committed to your care, for the special benefit of those who are most lowly and in the greatest need of help and defense, lovingly in the Lord We bestow on you, on Our priests both secular and regular, on religious both men and women, on all the faithful and especially those who give wholehearted obedience to these Our exhortations, Our Apostolic Blessing. And upon all men of good will, to whom We also address this encyclical, We implore from God health and prosperity.

The symbol of the Imperium is an eagle with two heads. While there is more than one interpretation for the symbolism in that, it speaks plainly to a simple truth: that the Imperium is built not just on the glory of Earth, but on the might of Mars as well. While the blood and bone of the Great Crusade are the gene-forged bodies of the Adeptus Astartes, their armour, guns and chariots of steel and science are provided by the Forge Worlds ruled by the Martian Priesthood. While inscrutable and seemingly homogeneous to the eyes of outsiders, the politics and ideology of the tech-priests are actually ones of multitudes, complexity and conflict.

Consequently, the priests of Mars are also an ubiquitous feature of Imperial society in the times of the Great Crusade and the Heresy. You'll be hard pressed to find a Horus Heresy book without at least one tech-priest, magos, skitarii showing their red robes and mechadendrites. Compared to this, it's almost curious how few stories are actually about them. Only one novel has the Martian priesthood as its central focus, and short stories or novellas about them are also rather sparse.

Imagine a world before recorded history, when tribes fought over primordial lands, when warriors struggled against savage and gigantic beasts, and when nefarious priests conceived their evil plans while hidden away in their mysterious stone temples. This is a world where weapons are made of stone, wood, and bone, and where armour is thick hide or fur. It is a world where fabulous gems reward the bold, and where the curious can explore cave complexes and discover strange new tribes. This is the era before time, the time that never was, the Paleomythic.

Stone and sorcery takes these ideas back in time to a mythic Stone Age. Here, the hero is also recognisably human, but armed with a simple wooden spear, cudgel, or flint weapon. The rewards are similar, but marvellous gemstones replace gold coins. The dangers are many and varied. Characters might face evil priests and nefarious doomsayers, as well as prehistoric monsters and savage beast men.

So the ground is laid for a rather exciting techno-thriller, andwe at least know from Snow Crash that Stephenson candeliver technology-soaked excitement with a deft hand.Cryptonomicon delivers in spades, but it goes a step ortwo beyond that as well. Crypto shows up again and again notjust as a central element in the plots of both timelines, but asa theme that informs everything from Bobby Shaftoe's wartimehaikus to Randy's attempts to decipher the love signals sent tohim by Bobby's granddaughter Amy. Discovering the hiddenpatterns within seeming randomness, discovering the order out ofchaos -- these things are not just in the book, they are what thebook is. The plot works in precisely this way, followingdifferent people in different times until their lives inevitablycollide and interconnect.
