Iam using CS5.5 Master Collection and I have Premiere sequence which I have imported into After Effects via Dynamic Link; I have added some effects etc... Now I am trying to pull the sequence back into Premiere which I have done via Dynamic Link (import after effects composition), which imports the composition fine, however it wont allow me to add the composition to the timeline. It will however play the composition in the source window.
I however have another question. When doing it the other way as follows. RIght clicking on the file and selecting "replace with after effects composition", I lose all my transitions I have built in Premiere.
Is there a way to export my clip into Adobe After effects, while keeping the transitions that I have made in Premiere? The only reason I want to export to after effects in the first place is just for colour correction. I would still like to be able to have everything I built in premiere untouched. EG. Transitions.
If once you import into after effects you lose your transitions, then really, adobe premiere is only used for putting in the initial footage and editing it (cutting it and putting it together on sequence timeline)...
Everything else, including transitions, and titles so fourth, would be done in After effects? I would only go back into premiere to export the file into a movie? Ive noticed once you export a file to after effects composition the sequence on the timeline becomes a pink colour and shows as one long sequence. How would I change that so I can edit each clip individually if required? For example if I wanted to change the order or extend a clip in the sequence in Premiere?
Thanks for your reply. I tried dynamic link from Adobe premiere into AFX and it works fine. However you cannot import the clip back into Premiere timeline because of it recursive pointing at each other.
That's what dynamic link is, you don't need import the clip back into Premiere, it's already "linked" to it. Your clip is replaced an After Effects comp, and what you change in After Effects, is automatically updated in Premiere through that pink clip you mentioned.
The other thing is if I go into AFX and import via dynamic link. I am able to import the sequence/clip, however changes that I make in AFX i don't see in Premiere. I believe this is due to recursive issue I described before. So not sure how you are using dynamic link... Doing it the first way via right clicking is fine though!
Remember, whatever you send over to AE in this method is "replaced with after effects composition", you aren't going to be able to "edit" it back in Premiere. You replaced that edit with an AE composition. You have to work with that in mind.
Hi, I am having a similar problem here. I edited a sequence for a green screen keying in premiere, imported the whole sequence into after effect and then I put a new layer (the person in front of green screen) on top of that. I keyed the green screen out and done other stuff. Now I want to put the whole compo into premiere without loosing any quality as this is part of a whole movie. I can not put the whole After Effect composition back into premiere and as I am using a new layer on top of the first premiere sequence there are no changes automatically updated in premiere via dynamic link. I am sure there is a way around this without exporting it, as every shot still has to be colour graded. Would you be able to help?
Once a composition is created in AFX one would think you could import it into the timeline... As many times as you'd like. As a separate composition.. But I can't... I can't even import the original edit which was saved moments before AFX crashed and had to be force quit (beach ball catastrophe for 20 minutes)...
I see that this post is from 2011, but I am having a similar issue. Upon opening a project in Premiere, all of the dynamic linked compositions are disconnected. If I attempt to reconnect the AE project, it makes it to the import After Effects Composition dialog box and then hangs for an extended (possibly indefinite) amount of time. Anyone know a fix or work around for this bug?
I imported composition from After Effects into my Premiere timeline but the video is shifted. Part of the video from the right is placed on the left. (you can see part of the red sweater on the left) It's still like this after export. Everything is looking fine in AE.
Hi @Ewa5EEF, sorry to hear you are experiencing this. This sounds like "Dynamic Link Compatibility Issue" as documented at -pro/kb/known-issues.html. The resolution is to update both AE and PPro to 23.5 or above.
Thank you for the answer. I had to downgrade my Premiere to 23.4 because of the issues with performance, but your response pointed me in the right direction to solve my issue. For me downgrading also After Effects to 23.4 worked so I assume they should always be on an equal version.
In Adobe After Effects (AE) I am working on a script for a short explanation animation. The scripting language in AE looks a lot like Javascript, only the documentation level of the scripting language is pretty low (even on the net).
I have added two compositions in AE, which contains layers per composition. The problem is after running the script both scenes start from the beginning in the AE timeline. I want to start 'scene2' after 'scene1' is finished. But I can't figure out how to do this. I started playing with 'displayStartTime', but unfortunately after running the script, both scenes start again at 0 in the timeline and therefore overlap each other.
The first way you can stay organized in After Effects is by taking advantage of Labels. These are what give each After Effects layer their color. And, you can change them by clicking on the label color box for any layer.
You also have the option to Select a Label Group, which allows you to select all layers with that same label color. This makes it easy to work with several layers of the same type, such as text layers.
First, the shortcut for adding a marker is the asterisk key (*) on the numeric keypad. If you have a layer selected, this will add a marker on that layer. If no layer is selected, this will add a marker to the composition timeline.
This allows you to create an organized folder structure in your Project panel, and then that project will launch every time you create a new project, saving you the time of having to repeat that process.
If your original footage is larger than your comp size, you can speed up your renders by applying effects to Adjustment layers. (Or, alternatively, Precomposing your footage to resize it to the size of your composition.)
I'm having a problem with premiere's cs5 "replace with after effects composition" command. Every time I try doing it I get just a new comp made in after effects but no files so the screen is just black without content.
Here is what it looks like, as ypu can see in pic one I have the clip in premiere, pic two shows the linked comp in AE with no imported files and pic three is the linked comp in premiere in that pink color. Thanks!
i've encountered this exacts same problem a few times before. In all cases it was when I took over editing from someone else (works on a mac) and copied all the files and folder to my computer (Windows).
The problem was that some video files were placed in a folder with a foldername that contained special characters (some dot character). The files load just fine in Premiere, but when you want to bridge it to After Effects the video files are not transfered.
I'm having precisely the same problem as that of the original poster dondematias i.e. when selecting a simple clip on any Premiere timeline and selecting 'Replace with After Effects composition', from Adobe Dynamic Link, AE launches, creates a new (empty) comp but does not import the footage clip into the project. Thus the linked comp is blank. (See dondematias's screenshots above).
I just ran into the same problem and played with it for a while and came across this. Its a linkage problem but its odd. it doesn't show the footage actually used. Highlight your Clip(s) then right-click to render and replace. This consolidates any effects and spits back a compressed file. Now when I took that file to "Replace with after effects composition" the full clip will now show up but if you scroll though it you will notice that once you put your playhead over a part of the clip that actually is used in the Premier timeline it shows the black screen again. It's not a fix rather then a workaround if your color correcting.
I think I figured it out! probably 7 years too late sorry. yea I was having the same problem and no info so I installed reinstalled both programs did not work. But i was desperate to figure it out was trying all kinds of thing. then I tried just throwing the video file right into after effects from the folder and then I got an error " saying can not convert Unicode characters" so the problem could be as simple as characters like mine was a como , in the folder name or file. I changed the names and it fixed it So I would if I were you try just dropping the a file causing the problem who knows you might get a different error message to fix.
I was having this exact same issue with Premiere Pro CC and i found that it was due to my after effects being on a different update to Premiere. So i updated my Premiere Pro CC to Premiere Pro CC 2018 and it fixed my issue once i ran the new version. Make sure both programs are up to date in your creative cloud and this will ensure they are both on the same versions.
