We recently ordered number of Acrobat Pro licenses for our team, but a few are having a problem when editing documents; whenever they try to change a letter or number with another number it shows as a symbol (doesn't happen with alphabetical inputs). The latest updates have been installed and noteably they are running on the 64bit version; my 32bit installation does not have this problem (each time i try to update to 64bit it says the "operation failed").
Is there a known issue with this for 64bit versions or is it something else (settings between us look the same). If it is 64bit related, is there a way of downgrading to 32bit to see if that changes anything?
We finally got to the bottom of the problem we were seeing on a couple of users pc's using Acrobat Pro. It turns out that the language settings for the program in "Preferences" were as "English with Arabic support."
It's usually better to make edits to the original document and produce a new pdf*, my guess is the fonts are not embedded in the pdfs and/or the needed fonts are not installed on the individual computers. You can try to run a preflight profile on one of the pdfs to embed the fonts (Tools> Print production> Preflight> Fixups) or embed the fonts when creating the pdf, if possible. If you go to File> Properties> Fonts, all fonts should say embedded subset.
Checked that and everything seemed ok. However, when looking at the fonts under properties, it lists Helvetica but doesn't say "Embedded" at all. Interestingly, if the user tries to edit this file no text works (tool bar says Arial, but in the drop down list Helvetica is not shown as an installed font, which is I suspect why no text can be used?
We opened the original doc we were having issue with and looked at fonts under properties. It shows all fonts as "Embeded subset" but the Arial fonts are all Arial Bold MT and that does not show in the fonts list in the editing pane of the doc.
It's hard to say why you can't edit on some PC's, I would find a pdf that is having issues and run the embed preflight (do this on a PC that does not have issues), then try to edit the pdf after confirming all fonts say embedded subset. If this works, you have a soultion. Are you able to request pdfs with properly embedded fonts? adjusting the settings when creating the pdfs might also be a solution.
Initially I have reached out to my IT department because strangelty there do appear to be sificant differences between the fonts I have installed (PDF's all editable ok, no issues with anything) and what others have who are having issues editing properly.
The example document we are working on uses only Arial Font. I went through the pre-flight process to embed the fonts and on both PC's, when the PDF is opened the propoerties say on both that the fonts are embedded subset, the list is the same for us both.
Check the Acrobat preferences on the PC that is having issues, compare it to your preferences (see screen shot). You may see an improvement if Acrobat is re-installed on the offending PC, and be sure to say "yes" to the "replace existing preferences" question when you re-install. Out of curiosity, check the font of the badly edited text (using the Output Preview tool> Object inspector).
Thank you so much, you have just saved my sanity!! My Acrobat was reinstalled yesterday as it suddenly just stopped working, today I went to edit a pdf to add some notes but as soon as I entered a colon : it went to the LH of the text, then numbers were just coming up as (to me) squiggles - my language was also set to 'English with Arabic support'. Why, Adobe, for the love of your chosen deity, WHY would a reinstallation in the UK have that as the default setting??? ?
Thank you for the information. It helped solve the same issue over here.
In only one of the systems where Adobe Pro is setup here, in the Language section the "English with Arabic support." and all the options for "Editing in Middle Eastern Languages" were toggled or activated by some unknown reason probably only Adobe understands.
Thank you, have spent weeks looking for the solution since the last update when everything changed. Had got to the point of changing font just for a number, and then with my new laptop was going to use a windows symbol, before I came across this solution. I'd even checked all my settings several times as they've always been the same.
I have the same problem but with Photoshop Beta. It only happens with system fonts (Arial, Times, Calibri, etc - so they are installed) & not with any other fonts. It also does not happen with my normal version of Photoshop or any other graphic or desktop program. I am running Windows 10 with 16gb & a graphics card so not a resource issue. I put in a bug report but have had at least 3 version upgrades that still have not fixed the problem. None of the other incidents deal with Photoshop Beta so the other suggested fixes are not available to me. I dont think it's an available setting or a pref. I am attaching a screenshot showing text ("test 123") in Arial & Times NR fonts. current Adobe Photoshop Beta Version: 25.7.0 20240307.m.2537 cf1d3bc x64
I just realized I had already received my solution from one of the techs (I forgot I had posted it). Basically I needed to delete the Preferences settings folder "Adobe Photoshop (Beta) Settings" & just restart the program. I had to retweak my UI but that only took a minute & everything is now showing up like it's supposed to. Thank you CoryShubert
July 2024 and still had this problem. It seems that Acrobat is still being shipped with this error that is so frustrating to solve. Turned the 30 second job of entering a date into an application form into an hours unpaid research to find a fix. I have used acrobat for well over thirty years and it just gets more bloated, and buggy, whilst the UX seems to reinvent its underlying logic every couple of years forcing relearning. It is used to be a program that was a pleasure to use but now it is just a grind and I avoid it when I can despite paying for a subscription.
The problem should not occur period, and if it is an issue that can't be fixed, it should automatically turn it off or provide the option to turn it off. This "work around" is not a fix. Adobe should be actually fixing it.
I just signed on to my CC subscription with my Macbook Pro running OSX Catalina (10.15.7) and updating the PDF file's metadata only using Adobe Acrobat Pro DC (2020) and attempting to save it from that machine ALSO throws the same "A number is out of range" error.
If you are using a Mac I suggest you to use Preview instead of Adobe. This seemed to solve the issue for me and I was able to save the highlights, texts and modifications I made to the PDF. When I opened the edited file back on Adobe, it seemed to work without any issues. I know it's not a real solution, but at least that will help you to edit and save anything important you need. But if you are stuck with many modifications that you already did on Adobe, then you are pretty much screwed because there doesn't seem to be a solution anywhere on this forum.
I also had this issue. I exported to Power Point and was able to print. The formatting stayed intact for the most part and was workable for my project. This solution does not leave perfect formatting so this problem still needs a real solution.
Print icon. The "all" radio button is selected. The preview image tells me I'm looking at "Page 1 of 2." But.... "The document could not be printed. There were no pages selected to print." Well, except for that "all" button that's apparently purely cosmetic.
I was able to export to individual images(TIF) then recombined in Acrobat...totally unnecessary waste of time and exprimentation , and for what Adobe charges in subscription fees, they should have had enough help to fix this bug a year ago.
I am experiencing the same problem, and have tried save, save as and print to PDF and print to a paper documen. The "a number is out of range" error occurs each time. Agree with all criticism here on the thread. This is a PDF document from a client that I must sign and complete before sending on to another party for processing.
I believe they are using a MAC to complete the application form before sending it on to me. I am using a PC with Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and Acrobat Pro DC latest version. I have found problems in the past with documents generated on a MAC and viewed or modified on PC. So much for the portability advantage...
Finally able to export to multiple TIFF files and then combine into a new PDF and saved. I first tried all other exports (including postrscript recommended by another user) save as and printing to a PDF and to a paper document for scanning, with an error each time. We should not have to do this with a defect that has been known for over a year...at least someone else may save time by doing this.
What worked for me was instead of trying to save the document after I made the changes, I just printed the document as an adobe document and then saved that printed document as the revised version. The changes I made were printed in the new document.
We are having this issue as well. However it is after OCRing and Bates labeling a file in Nitro Pro, if it is opened in Adobe Reader it will say there are pages out of range and there will be blank pages throughout. However the blank pages are still Bates labeled.
So here we are, there is a blatant bug hanging around Acrobat; symptoms are this stupid message no one @Adobe understands. It seems to occur when we have cross-platforms savings. What is out of range here? Adobe, please? At my office, a big school, several administrative documents must be signed in Acrobat and some of them get this error and the whole process is completely broken.
