The Herrmannators will be playing at the Peace and Justice Festival.  Come on down and join us.  We'll also be on the KKFI Local showcase on May 14th, I'll send out more on that later.

Peace,
Jim

Dear Friends,

We are excited about progress on the Community Festival for Justice and Peace and hope you will support or participate in the gathering. The event is meant to raise awareness and motivate community members to work to build the foundations of peace and create more justice in our community and world.

Below is an update on speakers, music, workshops etc. and a list of over thirty participating groups. Festival flyers, a schedule of activities and other information can be found at www.afsc.org/kansascity

We have a much smaller budget for publicity this year so we count on people like you to get the word out.

Please copy the attached flyers (or download at www.afsc.org/kansascity) and distribute to your students, members or constituents at your gatherings via email, in bulletins and in other ways. Please also post flyers in the community.

We also invite you to help us recruit volunteers to help on Saturday, May 16 to set up (starting at 10am and 11am), staff tables (1-5pm / in 2hour shifts) and clean up (5:00-6:00pm). Volunteers should email me at ihar...@afsc.org and let me know when they are available and what kind of activity they would be able to provide.

Entertainment will be provided by: Nicolette Paige - eclectic folk/blues/reggae/soul singer-songwriter; The Herrmannators- original in-your-face folk rock and blues with a social conscience; Checkered Past- acoustic music that zings with poignant, playful and sweetly subversive harmonies; and Esoke– traditional dance and drumming from West Africa and the Caribbean.

Speakers will include:

·      Prof. Linwood Tauheed, Economic / African American perspective

·      Dr. Josh Freeman, Health perspective

·      Alex Solorio, Hispanic / Immigrant perspective

·      Prof. Cathleen Burnett Death penalty / Justice system perspective

·      KC-AFT Pres. Judy Morgan, Education perspective

·      Fr. Jerry Waris, Poverty perspective

·      Wick Thomas, environmental perspective

Workshop will include:

·      White Privilege – Rev. Sam Mann

·      Everybody In/ Nobody out: Healthcare for All? - Liz Stephens

·      LGBT Rights: Are full legal rights inevitable now? -Dan Winter, ACLU

·      KC Peace Congress

·      Immigration Reform

·      Lessons for Afghanistan from the Iraq War

·      Time to Abolish the Death Penalty

·      Number One Public Health Threat: Nuclear Weapons – Ann Suellentrop

Again thank you for your interest in the Festival. Our next planning meeting will be Monday, May 11 at 6:30pm at the AFSC office, 4405 Gillham Rd., KCMO.

Please contact me if you have any questions or suggestions.

Sincerely,

Ira Harritt
