What are your opinions about the role and importance of GIS in
geographical studies.

A draft statement with a levek description and learning outcomes has
been produced. Use this discussion area to discuss what should be
studied by ALL students of Geography at undergraduate level.

I am reminded that there are some interesting papers published on
EUGISES site: http://www.eugises.eu/

Our colleague from Norway writes ......

Hi,

I agree that a discussion about the right term is important.

I`m currently writing a chapter "To be digital in geography" in an
anthology titled "To be digital in all subjects" (in Norwegian). GIS
is of course a major input here, but I`ve not yet decided whether the
concept "GIS" should be emphasized or being replaced by something else
like "digital maps" etc.

An argument for using "GIS" is that the term already is introduced in
the national curriculum, along with "digital maps". "GIS" is therefore
well known among teachers. On the other hand "GIS" might scare off
some teachers - too technical, difficult etc-, so in some cases I
believe it will be smart to use other and maybe less challenging
terms. I guess most people are aware that they are looking at a
"digital map" when following instructions from their car GPS, but not
necessarily a "geographical information system".
