"Ask and answer geographical questions using GIS": I think this needs
to be further refined. This is essentially the essence of Geographic
analysis in GIS and it needs to be broken down to thinking skills that
will guide the GIS implementation into the curriculum. What I wanted
to ask is whether we have a set of thinking skills. Phil Gersmehl in
the US has done a major recoding of these recently. Is there something
similar in Europe?

Yes this is a very good point. We did consider the 8 spatial skills
proposed by Phil Gersmehl and we believe that more detailed
description will be necessary - but probably at a later stage or a
different document. We should however look to highlight that a number
of these skills are so fundamental at all levels of education just as
numeracy and literacy are critical basic skills.

Perhaps we could come up with some sort of wording?

We do not have something like this in Europe - though I am aware that
some research is being done. We have not the influence of reports like
"Learning to Think Spatially"

The School GIS document has been revised following critical discussion
at the AGIT (GI-Forum) conference.

work.
