Hi:

I bought a beautiful work of art at the Made from Ike show during Herocamp, and just got this email from the author. Maybe someone smarter than me (which is just about everyone) can think of what to do with a free ad in a guide for Houston day camps (Matt ???).

Subject: free ad for Hero Camp

Hello!  I met both of you at the Caroline Collective’s “Made from Ike” show (Henry:  you bought my artwork – I hope you are enjoying it!).  I finally took a moment to look at your Hero Camp website and it looks like a great program!  I would love to be involved in some way – but my time is very limited, so we can think on that.

In the meantime, I wanted to let you know about my guide to Houston day camps, THE SUMMER BOOK® (www.thesummerbook.com), which is in its 7thyear and is extremely popular with parents and caregivers – below is an email I sent out to potential advertisers that give you more details.  It comes out March 1 each year.

I’d be happy to offer you a free ad in the book – either half page or ¼ page.  I’ve attached the specs, so if you want to create both sizes for me, I’ll save room for it.  I need it by 1/31/09.  Of course, if you have an ad budget – or can pay at least half – I am happy to take a payment!  I publish the book myself, with my own funds, so I do need every dime to make it a reality.

In the meantime, please add me to any Hero Camp email list and keep me updated on your plans.  Good luck with it all --

Importance: High

Greetings!  As you may know, I am the owner of Gish Creative (www.gishcreative.com), a PR/marketing firm in Houston, the mother of two boys, and the publisher of an annual guide for parents, The Summer Book®:  A Guide to Houston Day Camps and Classes for Kids and Teens (www.thesummerbook.com), which has become an important service for the Houston community.  The book is sold each year at all Houston area Barnes and Noble stores and their affiliates (Walden Books, B. Dalton Booksellers, and Bookstop), as well as at select Borders Stores and several independent bookstores like Brazos Bookstore and the Blue Willow Bookshop.  Each year my guide has been promoted by a large number of media outlets, including the Houston Chronicle, KUHF-FM, and KHOU-TV’s “Great Day Houston”.  Its popularity with parents grows each year and it continues to be THE resource parents and caregivers turn to when looking for summer activities for children.  My weekly e-newsletter, GISH PICKS,(www.thesummerbook.com/gishpicks_archive.html), helps create even more customers for the book, as do my speaking engagements to corporations and parent groups around the city.  I hope you will join me in this exciting adventure since the success of my book means success for your organization!

I am taking advertising in the book through the end of January and would love to have you hop on board.  Our rates are reasonable and reach thousands of upscale and active parents – your target market!  And if  you would like to reach summer camps, they use the book like a bible, too.  Your ad will be seen by all the right people and I can guarantee that it will raise your company’s profile the in the Houston community.

Please look over the attached information and let me know if you have any questions.  I look forward to helping you promote your organization to the greater Houston community of parents, camp directors, and caregivers!

Would any Houstonites (Houstonians?) be interested in running a week of hero day camp?  We'd need a place primarily.  I'd be happy to come down for a week.  It would be a big commitment, but I'm not sure how else to use the free ad...

Matt

I have no suitable place, though I'd love to help put it on.

There's a park in the Heights on Yale that has a pavillion and
bathrooms... There's a couple of Y's that might be open. DePelchin is
big on kids and might offer facilities (indoors and outdoors).

What are the facilities like near Discovery Green?

So, someone pinch me. Do I have this story right?

A few people decide that the world needs more heroes. So they set up a
meeting called Herocamp in Houston to figure out this can be done. And
there happens to be an art sale at the same time and place as
heroCamp. I just happen to buy a piece of art at the sale. I chat with
artist, Sareh Gish, and tell her about Herocamp. Sarah looks up
Herocamp on the web and is impressed. It just so happens that she
publishes a directory of day camps in Houston and offers Herocamp a
half-page ad, even though Herocamp really isn't about camps, day or
otherwise. I have no idea what to do with the offer, so I send it to
the Herocamp group to get it out of my inbox. Matt, who happens to run
real hero camps, sees the offer and says, "Well, gee, as long as we
have a free ad, we should set up a hero day camp in Houston. Who's
interested? And lo, a couple of Herocampers in Houston actually step
up the enterprise.

Talk about a series of fortunate events. I can't tell you guys how
much I admire your initiative. Let me know if I can do anything to
advance this project.

I'm going to talk to Tracey tomorrow.  I think our best bet is to piggy back on an existing program.  So finding a Y that would be interested in having us rent their facility and lifeguards for a week would be ideal.  I think with all the HeroCamp Houston connections we could find some fantastic people to come in and teach the kids art, go on field trips etc...

We'd need some staff, but that wouldn't be too hard either.

Could be fun.
