I have an inguinal hernia and I have been following this group for a while. First off, I want to thank everyone for all of their input and sharing of knowledge. It is a fantastic wealth of information in this group.

Second, I am throwing out the usual disclaimer...I am not a doctor or any kind of medical professional etc etc.

I have had my hernia for a couple of years, but until this past December or so, it was a little bump. Now it is bigger. Of course I have decided against surgery and am intending to heal this on my own. During the week I have been working with the ab exercises as mentioned by Dutty, and am going to start practicing Uddiyana Bandha tomorrow. I have started some other exercises, which I note below.

Food

One thing I want to express is the importance of diet. Since a hernia is a part of the colon that pops out, it only makes sense that one would want to minimize the amount of solid food that passes through the body. I now eat only one solid meal a day at most. My other two meals are liquid.

For breakfast, I am doing a meal replacement that I get from Whole Foods:
The next meal in the day is a raw food smoothie made from a handful of organic kale, a banana, a whole avocado (makes it milkshake like, and the avocado is very filling), some cranberries and orange juice. Blend up and enjoy. If you do not know the benefits of raw food, I suggest you hit up youtube and learn a bit about it. Our bodies are healing machines, and they will perform said healing if given the correct fuel.

For dinner, I then have some solid food....usually a bowl of Quinoa or a light pasta, but sometimes I have a more filling meal.

If at any point in the day I get hungry, I simply eat soup or sometimes a banana. Since I have started doing this routine, the hernia pops out much much less. If I slip up and gobble up more solid food during the day, the hernia comes out MUCH much more.

Other Exercises

I wanted to share an experience I had a few weeks ago. I was in the bathroom preparing to take a shower. I removed my truss (by the way, I wear this one and it is awesome: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00427FVKG). I examined my hernia as it popped out just a bit. For some reason I decided to do a kegel. As I did it, it pushed the hernia back in. Since I havent read anything about this (yet) I thought it important to share with this group.

Info on kegels:

I was pretty damn excited, and I proceeded to have my first hands free shower in a long time because I was holding the hernia in by locking a kegel through the duration of the shower. So now I am doing kegel exercises regularly.

I am also doing some Pranayama. In particular, I believe Khabalbhati to be beneficial to hernia repair: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OKKzVxtRT8

Right now I am doing two sets of 100. At the end of each set, I engage three locks all at the same time: I lock my chin into my chest; I draw the abdominals in and hold; and I tightly squeeze the muscles around my anus. Again, all three are done at once, and the breath is held the entire time. I hold it for as long as makes sense. I have been told that this lock in particular is really good for inguinal hernias.

---

Thanks for reading. I will share more as the weeks go on, and I look forward to hearing from everyone else.

Thanx, od, it's all interesting, but the breath of fire is most interesting. I'll incorporate that meditation form into my daily work schedule. My wife has a blood disorder with the antigens attacking her red blood cells. The allopaths don't know what causes it. I was trying to find something to purify the blood. Lo! Thanx! The Breath of Fire will do the trick, I'm sure.

I expect any type of exercise that can be employed without too much pain is beneficial to aiding the body to rid itself of a herniated condition.

My incisional hernia continues to minimize with daily routine and no specific physical therapy, but mentally I continue to refuse acceptance of the anomaly, so I can only claim spiritual treatment within those realms that are aiding in the reduction of the injured stomach section due to surgery for colon cancer.

I am now cancer-free 6.5 years and my wife is cancer-free 9 years.

We live in an area known for high radon readings and many locals have contracted cancer here.
I just recently bought a radon sensor and the readings are within normal range to this point but I will continue to monitor it as it is right on the border line between acceptable/unacceptable.

The hernia continues to abate slowly and I expect no further action will be needed but complete healing may take several more years.

Hey OD23,

Good to hear you are taking this on and making some progress! I started juicing my veggies for one to two times per day and have noticed a big difference in my hernia. I have had it about 2 years, but it does not hurt and to top it off, I train and compete in Triathlon w/o any repercussions! This may be delaying the healing, but I could not get a straight answer from Doctor, so I went out on my own. My abs have definitely gotten stronger which in turn has made my mind stronger. For the most part, the hernia is small and a few time it gets bigger (oddly enough, it may get bigger when I am doing ab work.)

Back top the food, yes I agree the colon needs to be kept clear as best as possible. I did some research and have been taking this product:
http://www.herballegacy.com/Hernia.html

I go back and forth with the lower bowel formula as sometimes my stool would be very runny, so experiment with it.

Good luck,

Jake

I also would like to thank od for the very good post. Trouble is when on the Google site I can never find any recent postings... I can see only the older ones. Can someone please help me with this. Thanks in advance

>>  but the breath of fire is most interesting

It is interesting that I read about how Breath of Fire is beneficial, then I read in other places to definitely not do it if you have a hernia. Similarly, I read that boat pose in yoga is awesome for it, then I read that boat pose is harmful. You may want to do a bit of research before starting that routine. Personally, I am going to keep doing it.

Jake, thanks for the herbal supplement suggestion. I am definitely interested in something that will promote internal healing.
