How to tell appart direct from indirect and it's importance

Almost everytime people talk about inguinal hernias they talk about indirect ones or that's what I understand.

I would like to know how you can distinguish a direct or indirect inguinal hernia, if this is posible, and what the implications of a eventual direct one would be. Does anyone know about that? the doctor diagnosed an hernia, but didn't told me about the type.
