HEN Habitat Heroes - Invasive Plant Removal

2017 Dates: March 18, May 20, June 24, July 22, August 26, October 21

Time: 9:00 am to 11:00 am

Where: Stanton Park, 910 Third Street, Herndon 20170 (meet at park entrance)

Bring water and bug spray and make sure you wear long sleeves and long pants - there is poison ivy at this site. We are providing gloves and tools. No knowledge of invasive plants is necessary, training will be provided on site.

Green Breakfast: Virginia's Renewable Energy Future

When: Saturday, March 11, 2017, 8:30 am to 10:00 am

Where: Brion's Grille, 10621 Braddock Rd, Fairfax

Speakers: Kelsey Crane and Susan Stillman, Sierra Club Virginia

Virginia Legislative Wrap-Up Forum

WHEN: Saturday, March 11; 9:00 - 11:15 AM

WHERE: Virginia International University (Conference Room), 4401 Village Drive, Fairfax, VA

DETAILS: Virginia legislators will be present to speak and answer questions. (12-15 VA legislators are expected.) Topics: Exploring the Role of Virginia State Government in the Trump Era; What may we expect from the Federal Government and the impact on Virginia; and What Should be the response of Virginia legislators to adverse Federal actions and inactions. All are welcome. Admission is free. Join the discussion with our state legislators regarding the successes and failures of the 2017 General Assembly.

Friends of Runnymede Meeting - Sun., March 12

The Friends of Runnymede Park are celebrating their 20th Anniversary and all are welcome to their Annual Meeting, ArtSpace, 750 Center St., Herndon from 7-9pm. The guest speaker is Dr. David Adamski, a Research Assistant in the Entomology Department of the Smithsonian, talking about "Scaly-Winged Transformers" also known as moths, butterflies and skippers. His talk will be a preview of what's to come when spring arrives in Runnymede Park. This meeting is open to the public. Questions, email Carol Hadlock.

Climate Action Night

WHEN: Tuesday, March 14; 7:00 - 8:30 PM

WHERE: Reston Library, 11925 Bowman Towne Drive, Reston, VA

DETAILS: Join us for our next Climate Action Team meeting to stay involved in efforts for Virginia to reduce carbon emissions. We work primarily in Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, and Loudoun to move leaders to address climate change and create plans to reduce carbon pollution. Our vision is to protect clean air, clean water, healthy food, and healthy community members. During this meeting, we will be strategizing outreach for the Climate Action Campaign, a public comment period for Governor McAuliffe's Carbon Reduction Plan, the People's Climate March, and more.

Audubon Society of Northern Virginia Hosts Advocacy Workshop

Speak up for the environment and our natural resources and learn strategies to bring about change.  The Audubon Society of Northern Virginia is hosting an Advocacy Workshop on Saturday, March 18, from 1:30 to 4:30 pm, at Green Spring Gardens in the Annandale area.  Register by March 13.  For more information and to register, visit http://audubonva.org/


Faith Based Care for the Environment

WHEN: Sunday, March 19; 1-3 PM

WHERE: ST. MARK Catholic Church, Cassidy Activities Center, 9970 Vale Road, Vienna, VA

DETAILS: Interested in hearing about caring for the environment from a faith-based perspective? Dr. Bill Dinges will explore how the Catholic faith calls for people to care for the environment He also will address practical things that people can do to be good environmental stewards. Dr. Dinges draws from 27 years of teaching about religion and ecology and from his personal experience of starting an Eco-ministry in his parish, St. John the Baptist in Silver Spring.

Film Screening: Facing the Surge

WHEN: Monday, March 27; 7:00 - 8:30 PM (Snacks 6:30 PM)

DESCRIPTION: Facing the Surge documents the tangible costs of sea level rise for the people of Norfolk, VA. Norfolk is home to the largest naval base in the country and to thousands of hard-working Americans struggling to adapt to the rising tides and an uncertain future. But Facing the Surge is not a film about loss and inaction. It tells the stories of citizens from across the US as they step forward to raise awareness and push their government to solve climate change. Afterwards, we will have a discussion with Kelsey Crane, Conservation Program Coordinator for the Sierra Club, about the serious issues of climate change and how we can get involved.
