Herndon Environmental Network Newsletter - July 2016

Hello again, HEN followers. Read on for news and info about what is going on in July (with a sneak peek at upcoming events):

COMMUNITY GARDEN UPDATES:

We are hard at work fundraising for the Community Garden project and we need your help! The garden will be located at Bruin Park (off Van Buren Street). There are several steps that still need to be completed before construction can begin: signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Fairfax County Park Authority and the Town of Herndon, getting insurance to cover our activities at the garden site, etc.

One of the most essential steps is raising money to bring water to the site. We are looking to raise around $8,000 at this point (a big THANK YOU to everyone who has helped raise $2,000 so far!)

This is how you can help:

  • Attend a fundraiser – see Wholesome Happy Hour below
  • Send a check to Herndon Environmental Network, PO BOX 1704, Herndon, VA 20170 (specify Community Garden on check.) We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and all donations are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.
  • Become an outreach volunteer and help us spread the word about this project to local businesses (contact in...@herndonenvironment.org for more details.)
  • Like and share the new Herndon Community Garden at Bruin Park page on Facebook. This page is focused topics related to gardening and local food; please post thoughts and articles you think might be of interest to others.
  • Donate online
  • Shop through Amazon Smile and we will receive a small donation (at no cost to you) each time you make an eligible purchase. On your first visit to Amazon Smile, select Herndon Environmental Network as your preferred charity. Make sure to bookmark Amazon Smile and always shop through this link.

Thank you for all your support!

HEN Habitat Heroes

WHEN: Saturday, July 9, 10am to noon

WHERE: Stanton Park, Third Street, Herndon

Stanton Park is a 10-acre neighborhood park that has large areas left in their natural state. Like most natural areas around here, the park is threatened by non-native invasive plants. The spread of these invasives decreases biodiversity and harms wildlife, thus reducing the quality of the environment.
Join us in our effort to reduce the spread of invasive plants such as Japanese wisteria, burning bush, English ivy and multiflora rose.
We will meet at the park entrance located at 910 Third Street. Bring water and bug spray and make sure you wear long sleeves and long pants - there is poison ivy at this site. Closed-toe shoes highly recommended. We are providing gloves and tools. To sign up, visit http://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040445a5aa2da02-invasive
