Welcome to all HEN followers! Read on for news and info about what’s going on this month.

 

HEN ANNUAL MEETING

When: Saturday, June 24; 1 PM to 2:30 PM

Where: Herndon Fortnightly Library, 768 Center St, Herndon, VA 20170

Free and open to everyone.

Agenda:

  • Presentation by Rich Dooley, Community Energy Coordinator with Arlington County's Department of Environmental Services. Rich will talk about Arlington's Community Energy Plan and its implementation programs (such as solar co-op, energy lending library, and residential rebate program).

  • HEN board business

EVENTS AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

 

HEN at the Farmers’ Market

2017 Dates: June 15, July 13, August 17

Time: 8:30 AM to 12 PM

Where: Farmers’ Market in Downtown Herndon

Interested in learning more about HEN's participation at this year's NatureFest? Or perhaps willing to help out with our Community Garden project?

Stop by our table at the Farmers' Market in downtown Herndon.

You will have the opportunity to donate your extra reusable totes or pick a free tote up while shopping with our “Take a Bag; Leave a Bag” campaign.

This event is organized with the support of John Dudzinsky, Herndon Community Forester.

 

HEN Habitat Heroes - Invasive Plant Removal

2017 Dates: July 22, August 26, October 21

Time: 9 AM to 11 AM

Where: Stanton Park, 910 Third Street, Herndon 20170 (meet at park entrance)

Join us in our effort to reduce the spread of non-native invasive plants such as Japanese wisteria, burning bush, English ivy and multiflora rose.

Bring water and bug spray and make sure you wear long sleeves and long pants - there is poison ivy at this site. We are providing gloves and tools. No knowledge of invasive plants is necessary, training will be provided on site.

COMMUNITY GARDEN UPDATES:

If you are interested in taking an active role in the Community Garden project, or want to learn more about HEN and find out how you can become active in our group, join us at our next planning meeting. We are happy to announce that the Memorandum of Agreement between the Fairfax County Park Authority, the Town of Herndon, and HEN has been signed!

Thermal Camera Loan Program

When: ongoing

Where: Fairfax County Public Library

Thermal cameras reveal hot and cold spots in your home. These spots indicate a lack of air sealing or insulation. Thermal camera attachments for your iPhone or Android Phone are now available through the Fairfax County Public Library. Reserve the camera as you would a book, and the camera will be sent to your local library branch for pick-up. More information


Nature Backpacks Loan Program

When: ongoing

Where: Fairfax County Public Library

32 backpacks full of fun items such as Edible Wild Plants guides, magnifying lenses, star charts and activity guides are available through the Fairfax County Public Library. More information
