Cynodon dactylon, commonly known as Bermuda grass, is a grass found worldwide. It is native to Europe, Africa, Australia and much of Asia. It has been introduced to the Americas.[2][3] Contrary to its common name, it is not native to Bermuda and is in fact an abundant invasive species there. In Bermuda it has been known as "crab grass" (also a name for Digitaria sanguinalis). Other names are Dhoob, dūrvā grass, ethana grass, dubo, dog grass, dog's tooth grass,[4] Bahama grass, crab grass, devil's grass, couch grass, Indian doab, arugampul, grama, wiregrass and scutch grass.
It is fast-growing and tough, making it popular and useful for sports fields, as when damaged it will recover quickly. It is a highly desirable turf grass in warm temperate climates, particularly for those regions where its tolerance to heat and drought enable it to survive where few other grasses do. This combination makes it a frequent choice for golf courses in the southern, southeastern U.S and South Africa. It has a relatively coarse-bladed form with numerous cultivars selected for different turf requirements.
Quackgrass thrives in well drained soils with slightly acidic pH. It favors thin lawns and other areas where there is little to no competition. It can be a serious management problem in lawns, landscapes, nurseries, and crop areas. To decrease populations of this weed in lawns, maintain turf density and health through proper culture. Low mowing and fertility maintenance may aid in decreasing populations. Turfgrass that grows faster will compete better with this weed. Turfgrass that grows darker will perhaps mask this dark colored weed as well.
We are getting into summer, but applications could still be made now if needed. Once temperatures rise, this weed should go dormant. Unfortunately, there are not any selective herbicides available for use in lawns. In these areas, fall applications would be best as seeding can then follow when temperatures are more conducive for turf seedling growth. In gardens, cultivation yields poor control due to the rhizomes. Spot or directed applications of glyphosate (RoundUp and others) may be used. Check after a week to see if a second application is in order. There are herbicides specific for killing grasses that may be tried such as sethoxydim (Hi-Yield Grass Killer and others) or fluazifop (Fusilade II and others). Read and follow all label directions very carefully. If chemical use is not an option, digging by hand may be effective but the entire plant must be removed. Plan to monitor the site and schedule future digging attempts.
Total cost of the artificial turf itself for the football field is $442,600. That includes a brock fill and a brock pad. That makes it a safer playing surface in terms of concussions and it reduces the risk of concussions.
He pointed out, The money to pay for the new artificial turf is coming from our building fund. We have a lease-purchase through BancFirst, but the money has been building up thanks to our school board and prior superintendent.
Engle 2 said the infields of the softball and baseball fields also are getting new artificial turf. Just like the football field, McKee Utilities, LLC is also donating all of the sub surface work on those two projects as well.
Completed in 1996 and renovated in 2011, the turf field was primarily built for the Duke field hockey program. The Duke facility features one of the best watering systems in the country, a state-of-the-art sound system and a new scoreboard.
In 2016, The Pointe was redesigned with an Astro turf field lined for football, men's and women's lacrosse, and soccer. Phase one of the project was completed by August 2016, and in 2018, LTU Athletic Field added a press box and temporary seating for 2,500 fans.
While it may look fragile, Grama grass is as tough as nails and tolerates extraordinary foot traffic and even foraging by rabbits. To take advantage of its heartiness as a turf grass, mow monthly for a traditional lawn aesthetic from a sturdy, highly-tolerant lawn. Is it an IdealMow lawn alternative? Absolutely!
This is the second time the Motz Group company has replaced a field at Zanesville High School. The company from Cincinnati started the new turf project at the end of May and have been working hard to have it completed by July 16.
Paced by an outstanding defensive effort, the youthful Blue Devils hammered visiting East Tech, 38-6, in front of an energetic home crowd electrified by the first football game being playing on the new turf.
This will be the first trip up north for the team under Dillingham and the first time ASU has been back since 2019. The team has taken a hiatus due to turf renovations, COVID restrictions and weather conditions.
"(They are) two nice fillies, and you hate to run them against each other because they're both really top-quality horses," Brown said. "Looking for a mile turf stakes right now, there weren't many options, so we decided we would run them both against each other.
Sports Turf Company, a specialty sports construction and surfacing company, is proud to announce it has been awarded the artificial turf football field project at Red Devil Hill Athletic Complex for Jackson High School. Working alongside Parrish Construction, the project will include an artificial turf football field, home bleachers, a two-story athletic accessory building, a baseball field house and dugouts.
Real time lake levels are available at the U.S. Geological Survey HERE.
The embankments have been raised to protect the City of Devils Lake in four phases, all of which are substantially complete.
The project included five new pump stations constructed by the Corps and the North Dakota National Guard. These pump stations will pump the stormwater from the interior side over the embankments. They range in capacity from 5,000 gallons per minute to 312,000 gallons per minute.
Remaining work includes turf establishment and final project documentation. This work is expected to be complete in the fall of 2017.
Through 2016, $185.6 million in damages have been prevented by the project. The city is now protected to the maximum pool elevation. No additional embankment raises will be required. The City of Devils Lake will operate and maintain the project once all the construction and project documentation is complete.
NOTES: Junior punter Jason Martin did a nice job fielding a pair of bad snaps and getting the ball away while under pressure for Dartmouth. ... The Blue Devils' turf field was dedicated to Dr. Robert Baldwin, Fairhaven's superintendent of schools from 2005-2021, during a halftime ceremony.
Over the years, team training has been occasionally affected by inclement weather forcing practices to be moved to a park nearly 20 minutes away or completely cancelled. The 2016 preseason camp was cancelled entirely due to inclement weather and poor field conditions. That should be a thing of the past with the installment of the AstroTurf premium turf system. The system will help reduce the chances of flooding, provide a predictable playing surface, and help maintain the scheduled practices at Camp Tontozona throughout the week.
Field horsetail is most often a weed of landscape beds and low-lying areas. Horsetail can survive in turf, but often will not persist with routine mowing. Moisture is always present to sustain horsetail. The spreading root system can be several feet deep and will produce small tubers. Horsetail is a perennial that produces spores instead of seeds. The habit is a primitive looking hollow-jointed stem with whorls of branches. The texture can become very fine when mowed.
There are several species of Equisetum that are less likely to be weeds in turf. Scouringrush (Equisetum hyemale) is less common and not usually considered a weed. It can be distinguished from field horsetail because it is usually unbranched and will remain green through the winter.
Cynodon dactylon. More commonly known as Bermuda Grass, this is one of the fastest warm weather grasses and makes for good turf (athletic fields) if mowed correctly and fertilized regularly. It bounces back quickly after a good watering, and it thrives in warm weather. It makes for a good home lawn as it withstands regular traffic.
