Hi Group,

The Hermes-Lite received a 2021 ARRL technical innovation award! See:

Although the award is in my name, there are many people who are essential to the realization of the Hermes-Lite:
  • Jim N2ADR, who designed the filter board, preamp and added support to his Quisk software.
  • Claudio IN3OTD, who made many guiding measurements with deep analysis and also designed the PA.
  • Phil VK2PH, and other openhpsdr RTL coders who provided most the initial Hermes-Lite gateware.
  • Alan M0NNB, who wrote SparkSDR with great Hermes-Lite support.
  • John G0ORX, Matthew M5EVT, Christoph DL1YCF who wrote and added Hermes-Lite support to LinHPSDR and piHPSDR.
  • Doug W5WC, other openhpsdr software developers and Reid Gi8TME/Mi0BOT, who wrote and added Hermes-Lite support to PowerSDR and Thetis.
  • Simon G4ELI, who wrote SDR Console and added Hermes-Lite support.
  • Zeqing, CEO of Makerfabs, who has provided stellar small batch production, testing and fulfillment of almost 1000 Hermes-Lite orders.
There are more contributors and I try to keep track of everyone on these wiki pages:

All contributors should take pride in this recognition of the Hermes-Lite!

Steve

Hearty congratulations and a virtual pint to one and all!

I mostly lurk on the sidelines, but in spite of all that passivity, my knowledge of SDRs in general and the Hermes-Lite somehow keeps increasing the longer I hang out here...

What a great recognition for the work put in by all the contributors to the Hermes Lite project! The Hermes Lite was a big driver in getting me back into the amateur radio hobby. I have loved operating and experimenting with my Hermes Lite. People are probably sick of me talking about it :).

Congrats!  That's awesome.  Steve, Jim (N2ADR) and the rest deserve a standing ovation.  Seriously, the HL2 is an epic accomplishment.

Hi Steve,

I can't think of a better project or person to get the award for all the hard, and sometimes thankless, work you have put into creating and supporting the HL2.

Well done.

Cheers

Absolutely brilliant news.
I often wondered if anything would appear in QST, especially an article
on the project.
It's been quite a few years since the N2ADR SDR Transceiver project
appeared in QST.

Hi All,

Thanks for the kind and supportive words, both on this list and via private e-mail. I just wish we weren't facing supply problems for the FPGA when this new broke!

After 30 years away from the hobby, jumping from my Kenwood hybrids to SDR and the HL2 was like getting an iPhone to replace the old rotary dial wall phone.  I've learned plenty, which was what drove me to try it in the first place.

I can't thank Steve and the supporting cast enough for putting in the countless development hours and enduring the dumb questions from newbies like me.  Take the average quantum of appreciation and multiply it across the 1,000 kits you say were sold and... doing the gozintas.... that's a big debt of gratitude!

Much appreciated, all of you!

Hi Group,

After over a year, I've finally arranged with the ARRL to receive the 2021 Technical Innovation Award plaque at a nearby meeting. I'll be giving a ~30 minute presentation tomorrow October 27 at 7PM PDT. It is open to the public via zoom. See the link below for details.

Indeed! Congratulations to the entire group of hardware and software developers. A great achievement indeed! Developing any new product, especially one that is commercially viable, is no easy feat. I’m a BIG fan (so much so that II have two and use SDR Console to operate both).

Well done! And thank you very much for your efforts!

Hi,
I couldn't get in to the zoom meeting due to error code 1142 (not allowed from Sweden).
I set the clock early 03:45 local to listen in.

I hope there are a recording of the presentation. Please attach a link if available.

Congratulations to your  achievement, well earned.

Congratulations on the award and thanks for the honorable skimming note Steve. I added FT4 after watching your presentation.

I love my Hermes. I've got one skimming and one another QRV when I get a chance to participate. And a Radioberry usually watching SSTV or experimenting with a transverter. No plans to sell them, sorry.
