"I turned off the device and everything was working fine. In the morning, I turned the device back on, but it won't connect to the computer. The only lights that are on are D2 (flashing) and D5 (solid). All the other lights are off, including the RG45 light. I tried another Hermes device, and it worked perfectly. I restarted the first device, but the same problem persists: only D2 is flashing and D5 is on. What could be the issue? I checked all the connections, and they seem fine. The other device works normally with the same connections."

I just received my HL2 and assembled it today - it is having the same issue (D2 flashing and D5 on solid, all other lights off).  This happened randomly - it was powered on, and I was listening to 20m on it using Thetis on my shack PC - seemed to be working fine.  I shut down Thetis on the shack PC and was in the process of installing Thetis on my laptop, when the radio went into this condition.  Power cycling does not help...

Hi,

Make sure your ethernet cable is firmly plugged in. Try a different ethernet cable. Make sure the ethernet cable is rated for 1gbps.

Hello everyone
Thank you Steve for the response, the problem seems to be hardware, not a connection problem. I have tried several computers, including Mac, Windows, and Razbury Pay, the same problem, as I explained that the other Hermes was turned on, as I have two Hermes that works efficiently.

I think it's a hardware problem. I need advice. Thank you Steve for your attention.

Hello, Michelle

This is bad news, I still have the same problem, and add the lighting of the network connector, extinguishing the two photosons on both sides of the connector, it seems to me that the problem is in the network chip, thank God, I have another hermes

Hi,

The LEDs off on the ethernet connector is a classic condition for badly or no connected ethernet cable. Try removing the cable from your good HL2 and power cycle it. The ethernet LEDs won't light. Please take a close look at the connection. Do all the connector tabs in the connector look okay? Is there a good snap when you insert the cable? What type of cable are you using? Is it connected at both ends? Did you try other cables? Do you have only one HL2 connected to your network at a time? I know this sounds patronizing, but there have been several past incidents similar to this with simple solutions.

It could be that the ethernet jack in the latest batch of HL2s has a bit tighter physical connection.

In my case, this was indeed a case of a bad network cable.  I had previously tested the cable (tested good) and it was working on other devices - but turns out it had a short in one end near the connector and stopped working if cable was flexed in that spot.  I replaced it, and the Hermes is working great now!

I updated the network troubleshooting wiki page as follows, hoping that it is an improvement:

If D4 is off, the Ethernet link speed negotiation has failed, or the path between the FPGA and the Ethernet chip has failed. Since this path is tested at the factory, chances are that this is an issue with poor signalling at the Ethernet physical interface and is thus a physical layer problem that needs to be resolved. Typically this is an issue with the grade of Ethernet cable chosen (it needs to be CAT5 or better, capable of gigabit Ethernet), or the seating of the connector at either end, or a bent pin within a connector, or some corrosion on the pins of the connectors. Try inspecting the connectors to look for damage or corrosion, and/or try different cables, and/or re-seating the connectors, then power-cycling the HL2 so Ethernet link speed negotiation will be repeated.

Hi,

Is the D2 LED (Run/Clk leftmost of the 4 LEDs) blinking at a rate of once or twice a second?

When was this board purchased from Makerfabs?

Please post high resolution photos of the quarter of the board where the ethernet connector is, both top and bottom of the printed circuit board.

Please check if you have a KSZ9021 or KSZ9031 with the proper resistor value. See this post for more details.

For more details, search for ksz9021 or ksz9031 on the web interface:

Does booting in factory reset mode make any difference? Short all 3 connections of the CW/EXT PTT before and while powering on the unit.

Hi Saad,

Thank you for the pictures and movie. A KSZ9021 with correct R34 resistor value is installed. The D2 LED is blinking at a rate of 2Hz which is correct for this configuration. If you connect an ethernet cable with the board out of the enclosure like seen in your movie, does it connect to your network? To check for a bad solder joint, does the board connect to your network if you provide some finger pressure on any major ethernet component, for example the KSZ9021 IC or the ethernet connector, or even turn the board upside down before and after applying power?  There is a bit of dust and debris on the board in the pictures. Is the connection problem resolved if you clean the board with compressed air?

When did you purchase this board from Makerfabs?

Steve

Hi Steve and thanks for trying help me
So about trying some solitons with my Hl2 I’m trying all the steps you ask about :

1- did I connect an ethernet cable with the board out of the enclosure like seen in your movie?
Yes
2- does it connect to your network?
Yes i tried but same problem
3- does the board connect to your network if you provide some finger pressure on any major ethernet component?
Same problem nothing happened + I tried but some hate air to re solder joints  nothing happened

There is a bit of dust and debris on the board in the pictures. Is the connection problem resolved if you clean the board with compressed air?
Yes sorry for that but after Fleming I do some clean work

When did you purchase this board from Makerfabs?

Hi Saad,

Unfortunately your HL2 is outside of the warranty period. From what you have reported, the KSZ9021 does show some life so I am not 100% it is the problem. The clock is working since the D2 LED is blinking. The serial interface between FPGA and KSZ9021 is working as the FPGA is able to read the correct part number and set the proper blink rate. If I were going to debug this more, I'd look at all pins of of the KSZ9021 with an oscilloscope and compare with a working HL2. I'd also add debug code to the FPGA to try an read an KSZ9021 fault codes via the serial interface. Besides the KSZ9021, it might be the ethernet jack which contains magnetics. I'm not sure it is worth the time, but that is what I'd try next.

Parts from Ali Express are really hit or miss. I once asked Makerfabs why they don't buy AD9866 from Ali Express as there are some low prices listed, and they don't because the parts are often low quality and/or pulled. I bought some AD9866 from Ali Express and had a local assembly shop replace some faulty ones on a HL2, and they said there were microscopic cracks in the AD9866 from Ali Express. Buyer beware.
