Hi Steve & Group

I'm tinkering with my HL1 now that it also has a TX transformer (thanks for sending the missing wire)
But i cannot seem to get it to send anything. I started by suspecting tha the transformer had a bifilar pair swapped and took it out to measure.
But that was not the problem. Then I tried to measure any output from the DA with my Oscope, but no signal to be seen.
Is there something that needs to be configured differently (than for HL2) in order to transmit?

I'm using the last gateware from the HL1 github, 2016-12-07. Perhaps I need to use some other version?

RX works like a charm. Tried PSDR, Quisk, LinHPSDR.
I have the arrow/altera SDK fpga.

Any thoughts?

Best Regards,
Jonas

Thanks Andreas for answering. It made No change however. Should this make any change in TX behavior?

When putting the Oscope probe on the pads for R2 on the HL1.22, there is no signal in TX.

Hello,
did you measure on R3 also, the TxDAC output? I think the latest H-Lv1 firmware disables the AD9866 Tx amplifier (IAMP) so you will not see any signal on R2.
To use the TX you should have a frontend like the v1.42, which filters and amplifies the low-power output.
If you do not have a frontend, I think the TxDAC output may need to have a DC path to ground, e.g. with a center-tapped transformer.

You should be able to back up to earlier bitfiles that use the high power output. That is all I ever used. I have a 1.42 frontend that I never completed building. The older gateware ran just fine if you stayed away from 12/10M where it had spurs that were not in compliance. Try some from mid-2015 timeframe. The email group may go back that far if you want to spend some time looking at old release announcements. I may even have some 1.42 bare boards.

Hi Jonas,

Claudio and John are correct. There were two frontend cards with the Hermes-Lite 1.0. Which are you using? One supports the TX via IAMP and the later one supports TX via TxDAC. The TxDAC was cleaner and removed a nasty nonharmonic spur. The last HL1 gateware supported only the TxDAC. You have to use an earlier gateware if you are trying to use the IAMP.

Hi Steve,

Yes, that is probably the problem. My current front-end is v1.22 and from what I can see, it uses the "hi-power" signals only. Should be easy to modify by cutting a few traces and connect the "low-power" signals to the TX transformer instead, right?

Best Regards,
Jonas

Hello,
you can certainly connect a transformer to the low-power TxDAC output. I see in this old message that Jim got 5.5 dBm with a center tapped 1:1 transformer (center tap to ground, see page 30 of the AD9866 datasheet). I've also re-discovered that I too did some measurements for this configuration, hi: see here, with some details on the effect of adding a low-pass filter after the transformer.

Hi Again,

After re-installing the TX transformer onto the frontend and testing, I can now confirm HL1.22 + basic frontend TX works with the 20150729 bitfiles. Albeit having overtones approx 45-50 dB down from fundamental depending on band.

Thanks!

Jonas - SM4VEY
