I think it has nothing to do with the HL2.
This seems to be a problem related to you host software,
unfortunately, you do not specify which you are using.

So very little can be done.

I found the solution. It seems the bitrate for the audio interface was by default set at 44.000Hz while all other sound devices, micorphones, etc, are all set at 48.OOOHz.

This seems to cause the microphone and audio interface not work in combination with the other output and input devices. 

It is something I tried to figure out for a long time, but now I know the cause. 

Issue resolved.

I use sound mapper and have windows select the device. If I have one choice then windows works by default. If I have more than one, I use the windows settings.
