FreeDV natively into HL2

Anyone ever think if it would be possible to implement Freedv encoding/decoding natively on the HL2?

I know that it would need to be coded in the gateware and then the audio sent to a small speaker and for TX need a microphone and a PTT. So maybe a small addon board would also be needed. 

That would make the HL2 first  integrated digital voice radio for HF. being highly portable and stable, that would be very nice! And it is all open source!

you need a computer anyway, so why not adhere to the standard setup
and run FreeDV, alongside with an SDR program, on the computer?

Quisk has built-in support for freedv, and it works well. Seems like a really complicated setup for something that already has a solution.

Yes. Kind of the whole point of SDR is that you can add new protocols without hardware changes.
