Hi Jonas and Alan,

Yes, it would be great for John Melton to have a HL2 and add support to his software. He is a prolific and respected SDR programmer, plus his HPSDR software is open source and on github. If he has the interest and time, I will send him a HL2 in an enclosure ready to be used. Since you and Alan know him, can one of you check with him to see if he has the interest and time, and any preferred shipping method, address, dates, etc.? Should I send directly to Alan how could deliver it? It would be even better if he was able to add complete HL2 support (fwd/rev power, N2ADR filter selections, etc.) and not just make sure the core software was compatible.

Anyone wanting to fund this can send money to hermeslite @ gmail.com. I will make up the difference from surplus in the repair pool.

Hi Steve,

Well said, sounds good.
However I do not know John, but I suspect Alan does. Perhaps Alan can ask John if he'd be interested?
If we get a positive response, i'll transfer $ to Your paypal account.

Cheers,
Jonas - SM4VEY

Hi Steve, Jonas and group,

Yes I will kick in a $10 to your paypal Steve with enthusiasm. John is active and Hermes-Lite aware and we have dropped a few emails back and forth with development ideas and he is really keen to support but probably currently sidetracked with es'hail and soapy. I want to acknowledge the work done by Jim N2ADR and Alan M0NNB who were equally deserving of a development radio but they were so keen to get involved that no carrots were necessary and I thank you guys for it. The work for power and SWR has already been done by Takashi JI1UDD and Claudio has done the work for the LNA control which is currently broken. linHPSDR is still early beta. John has also spoken of doing a dsp server connected to the HL which will feed a light data stream to the client with just spectrum, audio and controls which will run over low spec wifi and I speculate a relatively low bandwidth link for a remote station.

Hi All,
Graeme has covered John's current work.
We exchanged emails last week but he was away for the weekend and
promised to update linhpsdr for the LimeSDR at samplerates  other than
the default 1536K. Today it's fully working with one issue on 7 inch
screens - the Configure screen exceeds the screen height not allowing
the audio device to be selected.
73 ... Sid.

Hi Group,

There have already been several donations and the unit is almost half paid for. Alan contacted John. Alan also suggested we give the HL2 with no strings attached, otherwise it might be considered a "Poisoned Chalice." If for some reason this doesn't happen, I will refund any donations.

Hi Group,
John is happy with this, to quote 'Of course if I
had one I would make some time to work on getting better support for the
Hermes Lite and it does make it easier to have the device to test with.'

Hi All,

Thanks all for the donations. Eight people have donated a total of $216.72 for this gift. I will prepare the HL2 this weekend and give it several days of solid burn in testing before sending it to John.

Hi Group,

Here are some pictures of the HL2 for John Melton. It uses a new enclosure I recently ordered. At 40mm height, it is a bit shorter and more compact than the 55mm of the standard enclosure. It also has two slots on each clam shell half. The slots are a bit taller and wider, so the one thicker board I have fits very easily in this enclosure. It does come with one end cap that is thick aluminum. I am partial to the open half clam shell setup, so this doesn't really matter to me. The board can get a little dusty with the open enclosure. On the to do list are still inexpensive 2 layer PCB endcaps with silk screen lettering and fan mounting area. Since the clam shell is slightly smaller, I did a full WSPR transmit and compared the temperature rise with a HL2 in the larger enclosure. I didn't see any significant difference.

I hope to send this unit out this weekend.

I just wanted to thank Steve and everyone who helped fund this radio for me to work with. It is hard for me to justify buying more radios as I have 11 SDR devices already. Once I get it I will put some time into getting better support for it in both linHPSDR and piHPSDR.

Regards,

John,

I’ve been using linHPSDR and piHPSDR for almost a year now and I want to thank you for the great open source software. My HL2 works pretty well with it already and I’m looking forward to even better support once you actually have one to test with!

You're welcome John,  You've deserved it. You have been sharing so much with the community in form of both knowledge and code. Enjoy the HL2, and thanks for sharing!
