Recently I had this idea, to combine two PCBs into one. Specifically Hermes-Lite 2.0 + N2ADR Filter Card. I drew a new PCB named HERMES TRX.

Do you think something like that would make sense?
If so, what could be improved?

Thanks for the ideas...

I think it’s a brilliant idea!

Does that line up with the current case? I suspect not.

The original box is 5 cm longer. The layout of connectors and LEDs on the left side is preserved. The original end plate can be used.

Hi Rene,

The rendering looks very nice. You should pick some other name besides Hermes. There is a Hermes SDR:

The Hermes-Lite borrowed a lot from that original design. The Hermes-Lite is "Lite" as it is less expensive with 12-bit ADC/DAC, no 6M, etc.

The Hermes-Lite has a modular design with detachable filter as the intent is to provide freedom for people to home brew their own back ends, filters and amps, although in practice most people always just use the N2ADR filter board.

Some of the "extra" space on the current HL2 is to support an inexpensive 4-layer board with 2 inner ground planes. I'd be careful with your routing of this new board to make sure trace impedances are matched and low noise is preserved.

Hi Steve,

thank you for your comments. I will change the name Hermes. I wanted to keep the name because it is based on your design. Can't you think of something?

Just because HL2 is used a lot with the N2ADR filter board, I thought of merging. To make the whole thing as simple as possible and at the lowest production costs. Therefore, the size is up to 10x10cm and one-sided SMT assembly.

I tried to follow the ground loops and differential pair impedances in the design. But I don't know how it will work exactly in the final.

I still have a question about jumper J20 when one 10V regulator is used. How is that meant? But the regulators have separate ENABLE signals from the FPGA. How is it managed then? Which one assembly U19 or U12?

Thanks for the replies and best regards,
Rene, OK1XTG

The above is a picture of a Hermes board. I just got one of the last ones that Apache Labs will make. Still waiting on the 10W PA. I own 2 Hermes Lite 2.0 and that has lead me down this rabbit hole to where I have an Anan 7000 DLE and will eventually have a Hermes + 10W PA. The 10W PA is still waiting parts.

Thanks for what you are doing for the Hermes community.

Hi All,
Thanks for the comments. I renamed the board from HERMES TRX to SQUARE SDR.

Sounds like a fine name to me, and congrats on what looks like a very
nice design!

I did google the names of the "sons of Hermes" but none seemed suitable ;-)

Hi Rene ... Congrats, it looks very nice and it's a great idea to combine the boards.

I have a question regarding an input for the Pure Signal sample in your design. The HL2 requires a a connection be made to the connector that presently joins the 2 boards (pin 6 for the center conductor and Pins 3&4 for the ground). That connections goes to an SMA connector that gets added to the rear of the present HL2. It appears that you may have included such a connector, if that is what it is for.

Thanks -- Larry W8ER

Looks great. Maybe you could consider including the HL2 IO board currently under development as well?

Looks good.

One of my adventures is to bond a pair of Hermes Lite 2.0 B9 BOARDS  and  tinker with vector math to twist RF on transmit and  on the receive side filter out noise or competing signals based on Azmuith.

Your board should be-able to sync two boards for vector analysis of the received IQ signals.

Hello everyone,
i started building my designed SQUARE SDR board. So I'm curious how it will turn out. You can see the process on my website.
