G’Day Heather,
We may be in mid winter here, but it was 27oC on our front verandah this week!! Today our unseasonal balmy weather has come to an end.
I have looked (briefly) down the path of exporting goats to the US. A woman in Wisconsin, Susan Miller http://mohairconnection.com/jubilee.htm was after some semen. Below is a cut and paste of the email I sent to her in February following my enquires.
“I finally have some news about AI, sperm, straws and cost. It’s not good news.
Last night I had a chat with an AI man who was recommended by a friend of ours who has a goat dairy. He said that while it’s possible to send semen to you, it’s going to be VERY expensive.
In a nutshell he listed the known costs (off the top of his head) as
- transport $ 800
- Health checks (there are about 10) $1000
- Agistment $ 800
- AQIS $ 500
- Semen collection $1000
And the list went on. He said it will cost a minimum of $6,000 AUD, which at the moment is $6000 US, (we’re running at parity).
The other issue is that my buck(s) will be in quarantine for 4 months, and the nearest quarantine station is on the other side of the state. So there will be more expense before the process begins.
I also asked the AI man about the costs of importing a goat rather than semen. He said the latest cost he knew was $42,000. (At that sort of money, the currency doesn’t matter). However, if you knew of someone who was importing some goats from here, (South Eastern Australia, i.e. Victoria, New South Wales or possibly South Australia), and that person agreed, then maybe we could include a buck from us in the load. That would reduce the cost to you substantially.”
So I suppose it’s a question of how deep are your pockets?
It’s very frustrating to have goats looking for new homes here and you wanting goats, but not being able to import them, but that’s the way the global village works.
I doubt this is what you wanted to hear, but it’s the best knowledge I have. If others have better info than this, please let everyone know.
Best wishes from Down Under
Lill
G’Day Heather,
Sorry, I didn’t mean to tell you how to suck eggs*. It’s sounds like you know far more about this Import/Export business than I ever will!!!
It’s good you know Susan. I felt bad that it was going to be so expensive to send semen. Live animals I can understand, but semen. Oh well. Yes, I was aware you were a long distance from each other. Keep us posted if you are able to do some ‘piggy backing’ from your end. It would be great to have our beautiful goats on the other side of the world.
All the best
Lill
