Commandline arguments (or Launch options on Steam) are additional arguments specified before the program starts, these functionally change the behavior of the program in some way, such as launching the game and start the game with the specified map directly, or play a demo for example.
The Steam Console Client or SteamCMD is a new tool to install and update dedicated servers using a command line interface. It only works with games that have switched over to the SteamPipe content system. Eventually all Steam games will switch from HLDSUpdateTool to this.
Specifying a map is necessary, otherwise the server is not ready to accept connections from players to your server. You may wish to specify the "ip" and "port" parameters if you are experiencing problems.
im trying to run the original HL2. (not portal, ep1, or ep2) Im runing the latest version of crossover on a macbook pro, with 2gb of ram and a NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics with 256MB GDDR3 SDRAM; dual display and video mirroring capabilities; DVI and VGA outputs (DVI-to-VGA adapter included). steam says updating game when i open, does the whole valve on the guys head thing, gets to the main menu loading and freezes! anyone know what the problem is.
Thomas, for Macs with Nvidia graphics, it is necessary to set the Shader detail to Low in the video settings of Source-engine games like Half-Life 2. The use of "-console" in the launch options is useful because it allows you to get to the point where you can set your video settings. Without -console, the game can lock up right at the point of showing you the main game menu, because the rendering of the animated background triggers the problem with the shaders.
I was having almost the same issue, except that it was HL2: Episode Two that was freezing up at the initial loading screen. I took the advice of putting "-novid -window -console" in and it loaded the game up in windowed mode. Then I could see what the problem was. My ZoneAlarm was at one of the little popups that asks if it's ok for the program to access the internet. But I couldn't see it before because the game would load in full screen mode and not display the ZoneAlarm popup. Once I gave ZoneAlarm permission to let HL2:ET access the internet things were fine and I had no more problems. I was getting very frustrated because I was not able to Alt-Tab or even Ctrl-Alt-Delete my way out of the loading screen and I had to reboot my whole computer! Hope this helps!
When I try to open Half Life 2 It will load a black screen then a white screen then show the loading screen in the top left corner of my screen then quit out. I have tried all the launch options people have listed. It has worked fine in the past but it just suddenly stopped working. I have looked at all the threads and none seam able to fix my problem.
I am not able to get past the loading screen either. I did do the suggestion that somebody mentioned with windowed mode, that got the main menu to load up but say this in the console box:
"Platform Error: module version ('serverbrowser.dll, VGuiModuleServerBrowser001) invalid, not loading". When I go to play the game, it stops loading towards the end of the loading progress bar. Anybody know what to do?

I'm in the same situation. But I don't know about the platform error. with -console it lets me change options and settings which is better than before which would load it and then just close out back to steam - mygames. When I try to load a level it loads and then closes out. I dunno why this is an issue b/c Episode 1 works no problems, loads and I can play it, but not HL2. Counterstrike Source and Portal play well too without any launch options. Something is making HL2 trip out, can't figure it out
When I launch some games, they are not displaying but are still running (audio and sometimes the mouse cursor for them appears). I have tried the unity games with a variety of launch options including setting the height and width and "-force-opengl"
As a quick check to see if this was an issue with my build of dwm, I have another drive that I used on this laptop running a different distro that was able to launch the games without issue using my same build This doesn't mirror the arch system exactly as the other distro normally has sddm and plasma and is launching dwm differently. The only thing I can think that wasn't running when I launch X is xcompmgr. I am able to toggle compositing on my arch+dwm setup and this issue still appears without it enabled. On this arch system I installed/configured bspwm+polybar and the issue appeared so I do not think it is dwm itself that is the issue.
- 40k Mechanicus same as above, but the resolution seems fine
- Shadowrun HK - has this start.sh which loads local libraries, if you instead use "SHRK.sh" inside of the "game" sub folder, no issue.
The standard Easy, Medium, and Hard options are available.
Players may want to keep in mind that due to the VR controls and interactions the game will feel much more difficult than the base game, due to changes like manual reloading, and adjust their desired difficulty accordingly.
This option is available to simplify the reloading process. When Quick Reload is enabled, the player can press the Eject Magazine button then drop their weapon hand to their waist, pointed down to the ground. After a moment, the weapon will automatically reload the relevant ammo. Any unspent ammo in the previous magazine will be automatically recovered.
Half-Life 2: VR Mod aims to support both right- and left-handed players. If you change the primary hand, all controls will be swapped accordingly.
For example, if you enable left-handed mode, then you will hold weapons in your left hand and move with the right stick.
By default, smooth locomotion is enabled. The off-hand stick controls your movement through the world. You can also freely move around in the real world; your roomscale position will be reflected in the game.
Two Teleport movement options are available in the Options - Controls menu. You can choose Teleport movement exclusively, in which case both the movement stick as well as the Jump input will instead be used to select a teleport target.Or you can choose to retain regular movement on the movement stick and only replace the Jump input with teleport.
The player can grab items in each hand by pressing the Grip button (or squeezing the Index controllers). Release Grip to let go.Grabbable items will be highlighted in the world when you are close enough to pick them up.
By default, you need to pick up consumables like health or battery packs and weapons to consume them.If you prefer the automatic pickup from the original game, you can change this in the Options menu.
Press and hold the primary hand stick (or touchpad on Index controllers) to open the weapon selection menu. The available weapons from your inventory are shown in a hexagonal grid.Move your right hand towards the icon of the weapon you want to equip, then let go of the right stick to close the menu.
To throw grenades or bugbait, press and hold the Trigger of your primary hand to arm the grenade.Make a physical throwing motion with your controller and let go of the trigger at the end to throw the grenade.
It can be challenging to accurately aim a grenade throw. Press and hold the alt-fire button to enable an alternative throw mode. You will be presented with a visual arc that you can use to aim your throw. Release the button to throw the grenade along the arc.(This can be particularly useful when trying to deal with enemies hiding in small spaces or in open windows!)
Some weapons, when completely emptied, will require additional action to chamber a round from the new magazine. The first few times this happens, this will also be indicated with a subtle highlight on the weapon model.
Pistol: Grab the slide at the top of the gun and pull it back to chamber your first bullet.
SMG: Grab the charging handle at the back of the gun and pull it back to chamber your first bullet.
Shotgun: Pull the forestock back then forward again to chamber your shell.
There is a minimum requirement on both the swing speed and distance to do damage. There is also a brief cooldown period between attacks. This means you should make your attacks meaningful - we do not encourage waggling. :-)
Users should aim to have at least a mid-range Intel 6th gen or Ryzen 2000 series CPU.At least mid-range Intel 8th gen or Ryzen 3000 are recommended, and mid-range Intel 10th gen or Ryzen 5000 or newer are ideal.Generally speaking, low-end models in most CPU generations may still struggle due to lower clock speeds (particularly on older architectures).
Users with GPU headroom to spare may consider cranking up their render resolution in SteamVR to produce a slightly crisper image.
MSAA is also available for anti-aliasing. This can be taxing on your GPU, especially when combined with supersampling, so set accordingly. 4x is a good compromise.
To enable the developer menu, add -vrdev to the launch options in Steam. This will enable the Developer tab in the Options menu, with which you can jump to any map, give yourself any weapon, and a number of other options and cheats.Simply enabling the Developer menu does not count as a cheat for Achievement purposes, but there are many options within it that are most certainly cheats.
In any Source Engine game, you can change more than just the handful of settings available under the in-game options. The Source Engine is highly customizable: there are many different Command Variables (cvars or convars for short) which can be used to alter everything from the way the game looks, the way it allocates memory to providing additional game information, to recording demos and running custom benchmarks. This gives us an excellent opportunity to tweak the game to its fullest potential, making it look and act exactly the way we want it. This section provides details of how to undertake advanced tweaking properly in the Source Engine. On the following pages you'll find a list of the more useful command variables and what they do, but first read the information below on how to correctly implement the tweaks.
