Ifeel like they are actually stealing from me at this point. They never provided what I paid for so the least they could do is just give us the links to what we did pay for. Is that asking too much? LOL!

The Neat website doesn't mention Big Sur and for prior versions of MacOS like Mojave and Catalina, they needed to release "legacy" driver updates / posted special pages for these MacOS versions. Nothing yet for Big Sur.

2 - the Apple imaging utility (aka Neat Mobile Scanner) does let you start a scan, but the roller never stops after the page has exited the scanner, and there is no image ever deposited into the relevant folder.

Also - stay away from VueScan - I already tried this based on advice here, and that app is useless too, it does not recognize the Neat scanner at all. Just says that no scanner was found on your system. And it's a clunky old app anyway.

I left a support SOS on the Neat site at Who knows if they'll reply. I'll update here if I have any success. I'm thinking it may just be time to buy a new mini scanner though. Every single MacOS update it's a new hassle with this thing and I resent Neat's attempts to revise their hardware business into document cloud storage and then pretend like my scanner just shouldn't exist anymore, unless I cough up some subscription fee. Certainly not worth it - money better spent on a new scanner.

If Neat does not provide the compatible scanner support for Big Sur, and/or you choose not to participate in a subscription relationship, then your choices are use the scanner and software on a prior version of macOS where it is supported, or find another scanner solution that works on Big Sur with vendor support, or by means of VueScan Professional without requiriing the scanner vendor drivers.

Neat does provide a scan utility that works with Big Sur and their scanner, the problem is having the scan documents categorized and the legacy software used to do. For that they want an expensive cloud based software, other companies that have such software are for windows only.

Looks like Neat has backed you into a corner. Either retreat from Big Sur to a version of macOS that supports the software that does categorize the scans, or stay on Big Sur and fork out money for their cloud based software that categories. Or shop for a scanning solution that currently categories scans on Big Sur without the Neat tax.

I have two possible solutions for you. Apple's Image Scan software works with most scanners. It is not full featured, though. Try it out and see if it works. Or you can download and try the VueScan app for free to see if it works. It works with most scanners and is fully Big Sur compliant. There is a reasonable one time fee for it. It is full featured. I purchased it and recommend it. (I have no association with VueScan.)

On my Big Sur Mac, using the Neat Scan Utility application resulted in exactly the same malfunction as when I tried using the MacOS native scanner application -- the roller mechanism of the scanner continues to roll for far too long, not recognizing the end of the page, and when it finally does stop on its own - maybe 8 seconds after the page was ejected? - there is no image returned to the application. Just nothing.

Putting the Neat scanner back into the closet, uninstalling the app and drivers...and resuming use of my Epson ES-50 which I should add is a much faster scanner than the Neat scanner ever was. Didn't love buying a new one but it works and the scan time feels maybe 25% less than Neat's hardware used to be.

Can I get the Mobile Scanner Driver from any of you? It is no longer installed with their latest Driver Install which I believe is 4.0.1. No idea why. Without that driver the mobile scanner will not work.

I completely agree with you, Neat is by far the worse company, I've reached out to them numerous times and all they care about is charging a monthly fee (which in my opinion is outrageous). This is the only utility that I found that works with the Mac although after scanning you have to save it to a folder and describe each and every document you've scanned.

For all of us and others who are now hijacked by neat, has anyone found a way to get to the documents that were scanned into the neat app. I apologize if i missed this answer in the thread. Like everyone else BIG SUR changed the game for me. I would hate to have to go backwards to get all the docs, hopefully someone has an answer. Thanks much.

I installed the neat scan utility again and it never recognized that I was trying to connect scanner. Opened the utility anyway and it showed it was not connected. I went to the tool bar and view and then hit force reload.... it recognized the scanner from there and now I am all good with the scanning...

I own a NeatDesk scanner (ND-1000). This is a pretty decent dual sided scanner. I'm in the process of becoming a "Ubuntu" user instead of a "Windows" user . . . and have migrated pretty much everything I do on to the Ubuntu environment. At this point the only hardware I have that I haven't been able to use directly in Ubuntu is the ND-1000 scanner.

(C) Is there better UBUNTU software (read better = easier/more intuitive to use) than "XSANE" for scanning?

(I've used it a couple times & when scanning & saving to a .pdf, it always scans a "full page" worth no matter the size of the document I'm scanning . . . and I'm not finding a "CROP" option)

(C - UPDATE) I found & used "Simple-scan" but unfortunately, I wasn't about to control enough of the parameters . . . (a) the scan turned out mostly "blueish" (and I didn't find a color control) . . . (b) the crop option didn't seem to work . . . probably user error . . . but I didn't take the time to solve it, because the "blueish" document blew it for me & I found another scanning alternative: (X-Sane works well with networked multi-function scanners, btw! . . . both HP and Canon!)

(*** Update - 20120524)

I have Neat Receipts working in an XP VirtualBox v4.1.8 r75467. It requires the VirtualBox Guest Additions and shows up in the USB as "The Neat Company Neat ADF Scanner" and I have set it up in the main settings for my Virtual Instance with a permanent USB Filter: Vendor ID: 1f44 / Product ID: 0050 / Revision: 06a6 / Manufacturer: The Neat Company / Product Neat ADF Scanner / Serial No.: CNLF1.. with Port: and Remote: No. I run the Neat Application (Version 5 SP5) inside the XP environment and it passes right through. . . . I still do not have a solution to use the scanner directly in Ubuntu.

I'm now in the same boat you are - wanting to use the Neat ND 1000 with Ubuntu (12.04). This thread is a bit old but would like to help if I can - testing primarily, though I might be able to help write some drivers too. Are you still using the Windows XP VM?

If you want to keep your Neat scanners in good condition, and have the best possible experience, you should consider updating drivers for Neat scanners. In addition, if your scanner is not working properly, updating the scanner driver can be an effective solution to fix the problem.

Same problem here, it appears that on the side that lifts up from the scanner, there is a plastic strip that has been scuffed on my unit. I've looked only but cannot find that plastic piece to simply replace it.

Jon get a piece of 8.5x11 cardstock white paper and insert it into the documents port. It doesn't insert like a receipt you have to push it down into the scanner until it stops. At this point run the calibration then the clean cycle about 5 times and this will fix the problem. I had the same problems and once I figured out how to calibrate and clean it properly it works like a charm. I wasn't even getting an image after a scan I was also getting the grey band sometimes but this fixed it for me....good luck.

Possible Fix: Deeply clean the front scanner, then recalibrate. Worked for me so far. I took the front scanner out. 6 screws at the top of the front lid, pry off lid from left/right. Once open, remove the white flat-flex on the right (pull). The scanner head is held in with clips on left and right, a screwdriver to push them in. Careful of the 2 springs beneath the scanner head. Once the head was removed I used a alcohol wipe to clean the lens and really well under the odd plastic cover. (it doesn't come off).

I recently installed an upgrade of Neat Receipts from 3.1.3 to Neat Works

4.0. Apparently it's Twain Scanner Driver somehow has interfered with my

Canon MP970 Scanner Driver. The problem is I get an Error Message which says

at the top: TWAIN Data Source. The body of the message is: "Program was

unable to load the necessary component and it's going to terminate. Please

re-install your software." This message just pops up periodically and when I

clear it, it pops up again. If I clear it again, then it will wait several

minutes before it again pops up.I uninstalled NeatWorks and re-installed it, to no improvement. Then I

re-installed the drivers for the MP970, to no improvement. Is there a way to find out what program is causing the Error Message to be

displayed? If so, How? HELP!

Looking for a Neat Receipts alternative? Look for a system that puts simplicity as its top priority. Even more importantly, look for a system that keeps your receipts on your own computer, where they belong. Does a viable Neat Receipts replacement exist? Absolutely. And the alternative is FileCenter Receipts.

Neat Receipts made a monumental mistake when they shifted receipt storage from your computer to the Cloud. Neat cloud services have been very poorly received for one vital reason: users want control over their files. Unfortunately, Neat's cloud storage deprives users of that control.
