I just reformatted my hard disk with win XP and found that the
original capacity of 40 gigs had become 8 gigs!! I did an NTFS
format.

Could someone explain this phenomenon or tell me if I had made a
mistake somewhere? I am baffled.

Many thanks

Check your parition size in the Manager console. You can use tools such at Easeus Partition Manager to reconfigure partitions if need be. You might have accidently clicked somewhere and didn't mean to.
