A friend of mine has "Antimalware Doctor" on his XP installation: it
is a fake antivirus program, and therefore easy to identify. Since he
has little installed on the computer, I simply re-installed XP from
the original CD, and after a short period of time the virus came back.

Apparently this virus, perhaps a boot-sector virus, can survive the re-
installation process. Can someone recommend software that would
effectively remove it prior to reinstallation of XP? (The drive is
small, so another option is simply replacing that drive; but removal
of the virus would avoid the need to open the case of the computer.)

Exactly how did you "reinstall" XP?

The only way to guarantee a "clean slate" before reinstalling any OS
is to wipe the hard drive completely by using FDISK to delete the
existing partition, recreating a partition, formatting that new
partition, and then installing XP as if it is going on a brand new
hard drive.
