Ok, I've got what seems like quite a doozie of a problem...
I installed the Windows 7 beta as a dual boot with Windows XP. After
it expired, I decided to delete it, so I deleted the partition. The
problem is, I believe the Windows 7 boot loader took over my Windows
XP partition, and it seems like the only way to put back the NTLDR
boot manager (Windows XP's boot loader) is to use a Windows 7/Vista
tool (bootsect.exe). Since I formatted that partition, I can't access
that tool.
The standard route seems to be to use the Windows XP Recovery console
on the install CD, but that won't work for me. My wonky Asus
motherboard uses a weird Intel ICH6 chipset that has both IDE and SATA
interfaces. I downloaded the correct driver for Windows setup to load
during its boot, but once I get to recovery console, I can only access
1 of my 3 hard drives, and of course, it's not the one with my Windows
partition.
I partially solved the problem by doing a partial reinstall of Windows
on a different partition to get the bootloader on one of those
partitions, and then edited boot.ini for that install to point to my
main installation. Somehow, the bootloader can see that, but XP Setup
can't.
So now, I can boot into my original install of XP, but the bootloader
lives on a different drive. If I try to boot off of this drive, I just
get the broken Windows 7 bootloader.
Any suggestions on how to load the default Windows XP bootloader back
onto my main partition? Any help much appreciated!
