My friend wants me to format his computer but lost the windows disk.
The OS is XP and the Product Key sticker is attached to the case. Is
there a way to get a copy of the OS disk and use the Product Key that
came with the machine?

Yes! You can do that. As long as you get the same XP disc (Home, Professional, etc) that matches your COA (certificate of authority) sticker, you can reinstall with any Windows XP disc. We did that all the time at a computer store I used to work at.

If you have the original restore disk you should be able to reinstall the OS that came with the machine.

If you have the same "version" of XP on a CD, you can do it. However,
"version" means not only XP Home, but also the same OEM (if
applicable). If it is a Dell computer, then virtually any Dell XP
Home CD will work. But, sometimes OEM's will have XP CD's that have
the correct drivers for the computer they shipped with already
slipstreamed into the Windows install package. So, you might have to
work on the drivers once you've installed XP.

A "Retail" or different OEM CD may not work with the code.
