Questions for BOE/Brodow:
Questions regarding Dr. Brodow’s February 8 proposal:
Questions regarding future plans:
PLEASE ATTEND:MILLBURN BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETINGWHEN: Monday, February 22, 7:45 PMWHERE: Wyoming School, 55 Myrtle Avenue, MillburnThe February 8 proposal will be discussed and the Millburn Committee for Neighborhood Schools will have a presence. We will present the BOE and Dr. Brodow with our group's mission and position on the proposal. We will also ask a number of questions regarding this proposal and the future plans to alleviate the overcrowding at Glenwood. Please review the questions below and let me know which you would like to ask. I will send a copy to the BOE and Dr. Brodow in advance of the meeting. Once the questions are assigned, we can just line up and ask away. IF there is anything you would like to change or add to this list, please let me know so I can edit the document - today if possible.
A question for the group - should we introduce ourselves as Jane Doe, xx Address, Member of the Millburn Committee for Neighborhood Schools? Can you imagine 20 people introducing themselves that way and the impact it would have?
Thank you so much!
Questions for BOE/Brodow:
Questions regarding Dr. Brodow’s February 8 proposal:
- Stephen Cohen to present map of school district as it will look under the February 8 proposal. Are the streets behind Hobart - Montview, Gap View, Barberry, Forest – included in the proposal or not?
- Is there a commitment on behalf of the BOE to have a solution/complete redistricting prior to the start date of the new superintendent or by May 1? Are you contractually obligated to come up with a solution by May 1? If not, wouldn’t it be better to have a set of fresh eyes on the matter? - Brent Hatzis-Schoch
- To be asked of each BOE member: What is your position today on the February 8 plan?
- Dr. Brodow: What other options were considered in addition to sending buses 9 & 11 to Deerfield?
- What came of the plan of having some families go to Hartshorn?
- You have acknowledged that overcrowding at Glenwood has been an issue for at least 5-7 years. You have stated that a decision was made to leave it alone, waiting for the issue to self-correct. During that time, did you conduct a town census to confirm that it would self-correct? Have you ever established a long-range planning committee and/or community task force to study the issue? If not, why not? Other towns have done these things so that when they needed to redistrict they were fully prepared with the knowledge of what was to come. (i.e. Westfield, Franklin Lakes)
- In creating the February 8 proposal, what data was analyzed and by whom? How old is the data/study?
- Was a census done of younger children in the Glenwood district and/or other districts?
- Where other school districts who have redistricted recently consulted or studied? If they have successfully gone through this process, there is much to be learned from their experiences.
- Was there analysis of previous Millburn redistricting?
- What was the process from 1998 redistricting? What were the milestones then?
- How urgent is it to dramatically reduce the Glenwood student population? Can it wait a year so that a comprehensive, well-researched, community-backed plan can be put in place?
- Have you considered the cost of double busing that will be necessary for the next 5-6 years?
Questions regarding future plans:
- We’ve heard that a consultant has been hired. Can you confirm this? Who is it? What has he been mandated with?
- Will a census of incoming children be done? Will it be gathered on a house-by-house, street-by-street method?
- Will empty homes be considered in the potential enrollment at schools such as Deerfield and Hartshorn where there has been a significant amount of new construction?
- When will community input begin? What is the process for gathering community input? - Eric Andersen
- How will the methodology be made transparent to the community?
- Are you aware that other schools grandfather every child? Westfield, NJ. DC suburbs. – Eleni
- Scott Kamber: We need you to take back your proposal to our group to suggest alternate proposals because the data we were promised has not been provided to us and we are told it will not be forthcoming. - Eric Andersen

Thanks to everyone who came out tonight.
For those who couldn't make it, you should know that we had a very good turn-out, and that a few of our members who spoke during the comment period did a great job at representing the group. (Thanks to all of you who spoke as well.)
Although the Board seemed to say all the right things at the meeting, Phil thinks we should not let our guards down. He believes it was a deliberate, strategic maneuver calculated to get us to back off, and give the appearance that they are not rushing to a decision. I don't know that I agree with his skepticism, but it's probably wise to consider the possibility.
I would also like to agree with what is being said. I think we should continue to email the board and show up at meetings. We need to know what is going on. I also think we need to emphasize that we don't want the consultant being hired to see dr. Brodow's proposal, as this could bias the process.
I have to agree 100 percent
You will need to have a strategiic
Plan to address the other sections that will come out against us
You need to keep pressure on the board
I also think it was a mistake to have sent the questions to them
They need to go on record and by not publicly stating them. I am not siure they will
Lastly you need to start working on the board members
Next boe meeting more questions should be asked

Monday, March 22, 2010
Monday, April 12, 2010 – High School Library
Monday, April 26, 2010 - ORGANIZATION MEETING
Other dates will be set as determined by the Board of Education. All public meetings of the
Board of Education will commence at 7:45 PM unless otherwise noted and will be held in the
Education Center, 434 Millburn Avenue, Millburn, New Jersey, or at one of the district schools
as noted above.
A few things about the numbers. Many times there is a significant increase in the numbers from Kindergarten to 1st grade as people do other programs and then come for 1st grade. I think Dr. Jasin would be very hesitant to decrease the number of sections of the current Kindergarten at this point. Also, while reducing the number of sections is a goal, right now there are simply too many kids in the school so simply squeezing them into fewer sections will not solve the overall problems in all of the common areas. In addition, Dr. Jasin’s concerns are now out in the public and the differences between the other elementary schools are being discussed so many parents will fight for equality among the schools.
Some group of students must be taken out of the equation for Glenwood next year. Hopefully it will be combined with a phasing in of new district lines.
Thanks, Shelley

Guys,
We’re getting hit with the same assessment on our house for the last 2 years, in spite of mkt conditions. Does anyone has an attorney to recommend for handling the appeal process?
Thank you,
