Nick Straker was born Nicholas Bailey in London, England. He started his musical career in 1969, when he joined a band called Stonehenge, which later changed its name to Matumbi, a reggae band signed to Trojan Records. However, Straker left the band in 1974 and formed a new group with his friend Dave McShera on guitar, Pete Hammond on bass and Phil Towner on drums. They played dance music at clubs and weddings, and later added American soul singer Limmie Snell and guitarist Andy Gierus to their line-up. [^1^] [^2^]

In 1979, Straker teamed up with Tony Mansfield, who was originally a roadie for the band, but later became the lead singer and songwriter of New Musik. They recorded a song called "A Walk in the Park", which became a hit in Europe and reached number 20 on the UK Singles Chart. The song was re-recorded and released again in 1980, with a different arrangement and production. The band also changed its name to Nick Straker Band, and released several more singles, such as "Don't Come Back", "Leaving on the Midnight Train" and "A Little Bit of Jazz".
